The Karaoke Kouple will be back at Hal & Mal's tonight (Saturday) for one night only, leading the masses in karaoke like you've never seen. (Really.) The only questions are: Will Brian be in his element? Will the military show up again? Will they be in uniform? Will Todd hit that note in the Elton John song? Will Donna insult everyone in the place? More than once?
Come on out. Free. 9 p.m.
I just ran into a list on Chicken Spaghetti, a children's literature writer in New England. What's fun is that she counts the JFP site as one of six non-children's-lit-related blogs she likes to read.
It's cool to know that people out there that we don't know with no apparent connection to Mississippi counts the JFP as one of the their favorite blog sites. I'm sure it is thanks to all you readers who are willing to participate in such probing, intelligent dialogue. Pat y'allselves on the back for sending out a different kind of message about Mississippi.
Believe it.

Jackson Free Press Assistant Editor Natalie Collier learned this week that she is one of 10 fellows chosen to attend the Academy for Alternative Journalism for two months this summer at Northwestern University's prestigious Medill School of Journalism in Chicago. Collier, a Starkville native, is a graduate of Millsaps College. She joined the Jackson Free Press just over a year ago as the editor's personal assistant and soon was promoted to assistant editor. The Academy was established to train talented young journalists to do the in-depth reporting and long-form writing necessary to meet the high standards of the nation's alternative press.
JFP Contributing Editor Ayana Taylor, a Tougaloo graduate and award-winning journalist, was accepted into the program in 2004. Our current visiting reporter, Matt Saldaña of Boston, attended the academy last summer where he met JFP editor Donna Ladd, who was there to teach. He moved to Jackson this January to work with the Jackson Free Press.
Through our membership in the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, the Jackson Free Press is part of the Sunshine in Government Initiative, a coalition of media groups that are working to bring more accountability—or "sunshine" as we call it—to government. This week is Sunshine Week, a time that highlights the commitment to open government in the U.S. Following is a verbatim statement from Richard Karpel, executive director of AAN that explains what is happening in D.C. on this front. Fortunately, we can report some success so far:
On Tuesday, March 13 -- during Sunshine Week -- the House of Representatives is expected to vote on a package of bills that represent the biggest advance in open-government laws in years.

Here's the podcast (levels are still funky...we're working on that): 3/2 Podcast (29MB MP3)
We just got confirmation Robert Muller and John McGowan of the Lefleur Lakes project will be our guests tomorrow on "JFP on WLEZ." Tune in at 12 noon, Friday on 103.7FM for a discussion of the Lakes project, along with news, entertainment and songs from bands playing out this weekend.
Plus...WLEZ is now streaming! Click here to listen to the stream, or visit the new WLEZ web site.
All, head over to StateDesk for an enticing eco-devo announcement Barbour is expected to make Tuesday, as well as some intriguing quotes from Barbour and Trent Lott in D.C. media. Oh, and check out a D.C. story about Barbour's (old?) lobbying firm staying firmly Republican even as other lobbying firms diversify their business due to the new political climate in the country. Enjoy. (Discuss all this over there; no registration required.)

A reminder that we have StateDesk.com fully operational (although there are many features yet to come). This is a *statewide* political news-blogging publication, and we want as much conversation there as we can get to get it rolling. Note that there is no registration required (at least yet) in order to post. So all you JFP regulars head over there and say your piece.
The JFP's Karaoke Kouple, Donna and Todd, will host a special edition of Southern Fried Karaoke Lounge tonight—Thursday, Oct. 12—at Hal & Mal's at 8 p.m. This one will be for the cameras, folks, as a documentary crew has *asked* to film the madness. Imagine. The Karaoke Lounge will be a combined celebration of OUToberfest's second year, Tony Difatta's donation of his Medgar Evers painting to Boyd Elementary, as well as four JFP-related birthdays: Knol Aust, Darren Schwindaman, Todd Stauffer and Donna Ladd. Look out for them Libras! Y'all join us tonight, and note our early start at *8 p.m.* instead of the usual 9 p.m. It's in the restaurant, no cover, all ages. See you there. Boas and cowboy hats allowed as usual.
