Southbound, Upward Bound

Southbound may be a new band name, but its members--who hail from Jackson, Philadelphia, Sebastapol and Union--are seasoned musicians who've played all over Jackson, Nashville and everywhere in between for decades. They left the band Santa Fe and formed Southbound last year. Led by front man Jeff Stewart of Philadelphia, Southbound members are Andy "Cookie" Henderson on keyboard, Nic Massey on guitar and vocals, Joe Latham on bass and vocals, and Clint Marshall on drums and vocals. read more »

[Ear To The Beats]  Music Wants To Be Free

Lucky 13

The Jason Turner Band is practically a Jackson institution after performing for 13 years. Now, the band is preparing for the release of its new CD, appropriately called "13 Years." With Jason Turner as the front man, the popular rock band has opened for many well-known musicians such as Robert Randolph and the Violent Femmes. Turner's unique voice resonates through each venue as the band cranks through its shows. Always happy to take requests, he feels out the crowd and sings through the night. read more »

Green Couch, No Covers

In an old brick warehouse in downtown Hattiesburg, Paul Burch strums roots music on his guitar. Warm light bounces off hardwood floors and his comfy brown jacket as the song picks up. He breaks a guitar string but keeps playing. The cameras of “The Green Couch Sessions” keep rolling. read more »

Ever dreamed of getting up to sing the karaoke track you’re known for—“‘I Will Survive’ as performed by Gloria Gaynor,” perhaps—and in the audience sat a record producer looking for fresh talent? The Definition of Making It

The small group stands on Capitol Street outside the Clarion Hotel Roberts Walthall well after midnight when all the downtown buzz has died. Discussions about the city’s progress (or lack thereof, some members say) and the group members’ personal projects weave together like 1,000 thread-count sheets. 2 read more »

[Rob In Stereo]  Breaking Up is Hard to Do

It’s incredibly difficult to be objective about The Roots. It has been one of my favorite groups since I first heard “You Got Me” back in 1999. The song was the first live instrumentation hip-hop I had ever heard and is one of those songs that make you remember exactly where you were when you first heard it. read more »
