Hinds County Supervisor Robert Graham said a preliminary audit suggests the cities of Madison and Ridgeland have been bootlegging Hinds County’s 800 MHz Motorola digital radio system with the help of a former Hinds County employee. The audit, conducted by Browns Communication of Jackson, also suggests the unauthorized users have passed Hinds County’s system key along to other vendors, who are also
using it without Hinds County Board of Supervisors’ approval.

Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood says he will not defend Gov. Haley Barbour in a Hinds County Chancery Court case, saying his defense would conflict with other branches of government. Forty three hospitals have sued Barbour and the Division of Medicaid for injunctive relief, declaring Barbour’s plan to introduce a hospital tax to fill a $90 million Medicaid shortfall unconstitutional.

Bob Moser, who has reported for The Nation and Rolling Stone, and served as the editor of the tough Independent Weekly in North Carolina, has written a book on the manner in which the Democratic Party lost the once-solid South. In “Blue Dixie: Awakening the South’s Democratic Majority” (Times Books, 2008, $25), Moser, a North Carolina native, proposes that the loss was only temporary, and is already tottering on its last legs.

Alert: The government's deadline for comments on the bio-lab facility is Monday, Aug. 25. See below for contact info.

The U.S. government has not adequately determined the safety of a proposed bio-defense lab that could land in Madison County if many local supporters get their way. The non-partisan Government Accountability Office warned Congress this summer that it may not be safe to allow the Department of Homeland Security to relocate the Foot-and-Mouth Disease Research Facility—often called just FMD—from an island off the coast of New York to one of six proposed inland locations. One of the possible locations is tiny Flora, Miss.

The Jackson Police Department’s 330 patrol vehicles are constantly on the move, requiring engines and components designed for longer idle periods and higher speeds than standard car models. That power and hardiness, however, takes a toll on fuel efficiency, especially when coupled with $4-a-gallon gas and patrol cars’ typically long road hours.

U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate has put the clamps on an effort to change a new state law regulating the metal-recycling industry. The law specifically demands scrap buyers keep all scrap purchases on their property for three days, so authorities can check it as potentially stolen merchandise. They must keep detailed records of their purchases, as well as information on the individual collectors that deliver the metal. It also requires that recyclers register with the state by Sept. 5.
