At 38, country singer Jeffrey Maddox is in no rush to get to Nashville. He still lives in Pearl with his wife and two sons. When I spoke to him on an early weekday evening, he’d just finished helping Adam and Riley with their homework. But for this family man, the journey to his debut album, “That’s What Love Does,” is anything but traditional.

Ever notice how you can pretty accurately tag the genre of an artist solely by their name? With few exceptions, you can look at an artist’s name and figure out their sound. Slipknot? Of course they’re a death-metal band. Lil’ (insert any name) is most likely going to be a gangsta rapper. If you hadn’t heard them, would you think The Buzzcocks was a group of backpack rappers, or a punk rock band?

Every Saturday afternoon, unusual music fills Fondren Guitars. In addition to the sounds of people trying out guitars, there’s a distinctive electronic melody reverberating through the store. Standing in the corner of the shop is the creator of the unique sound: Thomas Grillo holds his hands over a small wooden box with two antennas sticking out of it. Without touching the device, he makes slight gestures with his hands, and an eerie, almost voice-like sound spills out. Grillo is playing a theremin, one of the most unique electronic instruments.

In post-World War II American history, 1968 was a seminal year. It began with a brutal awakening with the Tet Offensive in Vietnam and culminated in the election of President Richard Nixon. Between these benchmarks were the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, a riotous Democratic convention in Chicago and the Soviet Union’s invasion of Czechoslovakia to put down a growing political liberation.by Rob Hamilton

The major summer 2008 hip-hop story has undoubtedly been Lil’ Wayne “Michael Phelps-ing” the charts with his highly anticipated, double platinum (and counting) “Tha Carter III” album. In a musical climate where the only records turning a profit are those involving a High School Musical or Hannah Montana, Weezy has managed to become a money-making machine that has revitalized the hope that the music industry is not on its last leg. As each week passes, thousands of copies of “Tha Carter III” fly off the shelves while a new song from the album finds its way onto radio.

There’s no mistaking the home of Elvis tribute artist Shea Arender. Four white pillars and a pair of somber stone lions flank his front door, eliciting a knowing grin from visitors as if they have been let in on a good joke. After all, these iconic features from rock ‘n’ roll’s most famous estate seem misplaced among the modest spec houses in this unassuming Clinton subdivision. But somewhere beneath my chuckle, I fail to suppress a fleeting thrill; for a brief moment I am at Graceland’s gates.
