[The Slate] The Best In Sports In 7 Days

by Doctor S
July 30, 2008

Thursday, July 31
Southern League baseball, Chattanooga at Mississippi (7 p.m., Pearl, 1590 AM): The M-Braves and Lookouts wrap up their series at the TeePee.

Friday, Aug. 1
Southern League baseball, Mississippi at Huntsville (7 p.m., Huntsville, 1590 AM): The M-Braves head for the mountains of Alabama to open a series with the Stars.

Saturday, Aug. 2
Youth baseball, Dizzy Dean World Series championship (noon, CSS): Live … on tape … from Southaven, it’s Thursday’s 15-16 Junior Division title game. Will Hernando bring home the trophy?

Sunday, Aug. 3
NFL football, Indianapolis vs. Washington in Hall of Fame Game (7 p.m., ESPN): It’s time for America’s third-favorite sport: NFL preseason football. Peyton Manning won’t be playing, and Taylorsville Jason Campbell won’t play for long.

Monday, Aug. 4
MLB baseball, Houston at Chicago Cubs (6 p.m., ESPN): Can the Astros slow down the Cubs’ drive toward the NL Central crown? No.

Tuesday, Aug. 5
MLB baseball, Atlanta at San Francisco (9:15 p.m., SportSouth/620 AM): If the Braves can’t get into the playoffs, at least they can go somewhere nice while they slip further behind.

Wednesday, Aug. 6
Southern League baseball, Jacksonville at Mississippi (7 p.m., Pearl, 1590 AM): The Suns come to town for a series with the M-Braves. Cue “Walking on Sunshine.” … Pro soccer, Barcelona at New York
(6 p.m., ESPN2): What do the Red Bulls get out of playing a friendly with big, bad Barca? They get a big crowd paying big prices for tickets and a sound thrashing.

The Slate is compiled by Doctor S, who is counting the days until he’s eligible for free agency.
