Testing New JFP Feature: Restaurant Listings and Ratings

Hey all -- Vince has been working hard in the background on a new feature here on http://www.jacksonfreepress.com -- Restaurant listings and user reviews! It's ready to roll in "beta" format now, so please visit:

http://www.jacksonfreepress.com/index.php/restaurants/

and see what you think. If you're logged in, you can leave star ratings and mini-reviews of your favorite restaurants.

Also, please be serious in your reviews, as we're hoping that even the reviews and ratings that we complete at this time will be able to remain up and running with the tool goes "live."

Use this thread for bug reports, suggestions or kudos. Thanks!

Update (8:45 PM 10/08/08): Error finally fixed; pages are working now. -vince

UI Concern: Rate This on primary listing pages do not do anything. They should either be AJAX-ified for quick rating or link to the detail page. *** If they do, they don't in Safari 3/Mac 10.4.11...

Great idea! If we don't do anything else in Jackson, we definitely eat, so I'm sure the site will come in handy. I'll play around with it.

Knol, I'm having the same problem using Safari 3.1.2 for Windows. I click on "Rate This" and get a blank screen.

knol, LW...

yeah something went wonky behind the scenes with those pages. working on that right now.

i swear they worked last week...damn office gnomes...

I'm a PC, and my rating screens are blank also.

Keep 'em coming...this is why we beta test. ;-)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm testing on my Mac Firefox 3.0.3, Safari 3.1.2) and PC (Firefox 3.0.3, Safari 3.1.2, IE 7.0.57) , and get a blank page whenever I click on a restaurant or a rating link. Will be happy to send screenshots/etc. if you like.

FIXED!

Also, Logan the Intern deserves kudos for populating our database with damn near every restaurant known to mainstream Jackson!

Earlier when I was on the beta-beat, I got what looked like a bad XML/XHTML output including EE code. Very bizarre. Happened twice on a VERY slow load of the page. Don't have screenshots but can tell you I saw all the EE hooks including header, footer, and content.

Not sure if anyone else has experienced that, but I'd check error-reporting to see if it's on and public and/or check the error logs to see what happened a few minutes before I placed my previous comment.

This will be a great feature- thank you for doing it!

After rating a restaurant, I get a blank page and have to hit the back button. This is on IE7

posted by Puck on 10/09/08 at 08:13 AM

Also, what happens if you want to edit your rating? Maybe change something from a 4 to a 3 or revise some spelling?

Also, I noticed some bakeries missing - Obie's, Campbell's, That Special Touch

I know we are supposed to send this to events(at)jfp.com but it might be cool to do a web form that allows the user to classify, maybe upload a graphic (small of course), etc.

Sorry for all the comments! But what about a number of reviews? Like (**** for 4 Reviews) because let's say you just got one review and you got a bad review - it would only average out to 1 star. In other words, it might be misleading.

Again, sorry for all the comments :)

Vince,
After I submit my review, it goes to a black page. Not sure if that is just me or everyone.
