Jackson Police officer DeWayne Collier, who was shot in the line of duty July 7, remains stable but in serious condition at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

According to the Jackson Police Department, Collier was shot around 11 a.m. along Flag Chapel Road near Clinton Blvd. He was shot twice in the side and once in the head after stopping two robbery suspects who had been seen fleeing from Mississippi Title Loans on U.S. 80. He is scheduled to have surgery today.

Cornelius Black, 20, of Jackson and Antonio Turner, 23, of Brandon were arrested Monday in connection to the shooting.

Both have been charged with aggravated assault of a police officer, armed carjacking, two counts of armed robbery of a business and being a felon in possession of a firearm, said JPD Spokesman Sgt. Jeffrey Scott.

“The job is unpredictable,” Scott said. “It never gets any easier. We just try to help those officers try to cope.”

The two men are being held at the Hinds County Detention Center without bond until they appear in Jackson Municipal Court.
