[Sue Doh Nem] Recession Snacks

by Sue Doh Nem
May 14, 2008

Kunta ‘Rahsheed X’ Toby: “Unlock this door with the key of living life poor. Beyond the raggedy door is another dimension—one of insufficient funds in your bank account; a dimension of making ends meet in a recessive, price-inflated economy; a dimension of losing your broke, busted and disgusted mind. You’re moving into a place of both living from paycheck to paycheck and home foreclosure, high unemployment and hiring freezes, confusing Medicaid health options, and a vain, shallow and fearful society. You’ve just crossed over into the ‘Financially Challenged Twilight Zone!’”

(A bewildered Grandma Church Hat uses her Cootie Bug user-friendly cell phone for seniors to call the Ghetto Science Financially Challenged Crisis Hotline. She’s inside the Pork-N-Piggly supermarket with a pile of groceries at the checkout counter. Her debit card has been declined, due to insufficient funds. Boneqweesha Jones takes the call.)

Boneqweesha Jones: “What’s wrong, Grandma?”

Grandma Church Hat: “I’m broke and can’t make groceries! Price inflation in America is affecting my money. What should I do?”

Boneqweesha Jones: “Return those expensive pre-cooked, sweet-n-sour Oriental chicken wings marinated in sookie-sookie soy sauce, the bag of Super Cheesy-Cheese Doodles and the package of chocolate chip coconut candy bars!”

Grandma Church Hat: “Have mercy! The recessive economy is messing with my snacks. (She hangs up the phone and speed dials another number.) Hello. Is this the ‘Jesus Is On the Main Line Crisis Center?’ Please help a sister out!”
