[Sue Doh Nem] Hush and Be Cool

by Sue Doh Nem
April 9, 2008

Boneqweesha Jones: “Stimulus checks come to those financially challenged citizens who wait for a few months. Today hundreds of consumers have gathered at the Funky Ghetto Mall parking lot to celebrate the long-awaited arrival of their stimulus checks and view the procession of the Ghetto Science Team’s Post Tax Refund and Stimulus Check Day Parade, broadcast live on Ghetto Science Public Television. Kunta ‘Rahsheed X’ Toby, controversial filmmaker and media mogul, is my co-host for this unique event.

“Leading the parade and passing out fliers advertising a ‘Spend Your Stimulus Check Sale at Jojo’s Discount Dollar Store’ are Jojo and Miss Doodle Mae. Kunta, share with our viewers your feelings about this day.”

Kunta: “When folk spend all of their ‘hush and be cool’ money, the party will be over.”

Boneqweesha: “Break it down, brother.”

Kunta: “For years consumers have been abused and affected by high prices and unemployment, predatory lending, etc. Consumer apathy and retaliation are showing like bad skin bruises. Victims of financial abuse have continuously griped, moaned and complained about the state of the economy. But the government has slyly and conveniently placed the burden of stimulating the economy back onto the consumer.”

Boneqweesha: “Wow, Kunta, it’s broke—our economy, that is.”

Kunta: “Yep, and the poor people are paying the debt.”

Boneqweesha: “Seems like the financially challenged have been banked into submission.”

Kunta: “The cycle of abuse continues. When will it end?”

Boneqweesha: “Hopefully, when people spend that stimulus money.”

Yeah, we know it's hush money, but if I get a check, I'm not returning it. :-P

Seriously though, something's got to give. We just got an economic stimulus in 2001, and what have we learned between then and now? I know the government wants us to spend it on a big-ticket item, but I have bills. I would like to save a little of it, though. I wonder how much interest I would have earned if I saved the last check I got.
