Combine rock, R&B, hip-hop and electronic music, and you have an eclectic band called Storage 24. Yet, despite their mix of varying genres, the band has a passion that ties all them together: Mississippi. The members began their music in a storage warehouse, labeled "storage 24" in Pearl, and adopted the name to always remind themselves where they came from.

"I have seen a lot of people talk down about Mississippi, and it would crush my heart. I know that the reason is because of the history of Mississippi, and we are the kind of band that wants to show them differently," founder and vocalist, Baby Phred says.

Storage 24 consists of six members: Baby Phred (vocals), Kamikaze (rapper), Daniel G. (drums), Daniel W. (guitar), R.C. (bass) and Unkl Ryan (DJ). Earlier this month, the band won top honors at Club La Vela's national Battle of the Bands competition in Panama City, Fla. In addition to a cash prize, Storage 24 was guaranteed a spot on MTV's "Spring Break Concerts" in 2010. They will have the opportunity to open for a well-known band at Club La Vela this year.

"We didn't expect to win at all; it was a huge shock. We're humble guys. ... To win an award like that was a big deal for us," Daniel G. says.

Baby Phred says he would like to see more support for local musicians and mixed-race bands like Storage 24.

"I want it to be known that they (Jacksonians) need to step up and get behind these artists representing their state; we still aren't getting the publicity we need. We are an inter-racial band, and no one will support us here, so we have to get out of our own state to gain support," Baby Phred says.

Check out the Storage 24 single, "No Surrender," on iTunes. The band expects an album release sometime in early January. To listen to the band's music and see their show dates, visit http://www.www.myspace.com/storage24live.
