Tuesday, Nov. 3

10 a.m., Jackson City Council meets at Jackson City Hall (200 S. President St.). Call 601-960-1037.

Noon, "The Dollars and Cents of Federalism: Can States Survive Federal Budget Growth and Mandates?" at the Capital Club (125 S. Congress St., Suite 19). Hosted by the Federalist Society of Mississippi, State Treasurer Tate Reeves and Dr. Charles P. Blahous III of the Hudson Institute discuss implications of federal spending on the state of Mississippi. $20 per lunch; call 601-965-8137.

4:30 p.m., Small Business Administration Loan Clinic at Regions Plaza (210 E. Capitol St.). The SBA of Mississippi leads this clinic. Free; call 601-965-4378 ext 11.

1 p.m., Matthew Holden Jr. Symposium: "Barack Obama and the Future of the Black Prophetic Tradition," at Jackson State University, College of Liberal Arts (1400 John R. Lynch St.). Glenn Loury of Brown University will present at this third annual academic event. Free; call 601-979-6949.

6 p.m., Community Reinvestment Awards at the Jackson Medical Mall (350 W. Woodrow Wilson Ave.). The Jackson Medical Mall Foundation honors four agencies that empower students by providing knowledge and motivation, safe havens and investing in the overall health and well-being. Call 601-982-8467.

Friday, Nov. 6

5:30 p.m., Jazz for a Cause at Koinonia Coffee (136 S. Adams St., Suite C). Andrew Lewis and an ensemble of JSU musicians perform while raising awareness about the Voice of Calvary Ministries. Free; call 601-960-3008.

Saturday, Nov. 7

7:30 a.m., Walk for a Wish 5k at Millsaps College (1701 N. State St.). The Millsaps College chapter of Chi Omega holds this 5k to benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation. $20, $15 in advance; call 601-421-2916.

10 a.m., NAMIWalks at LeFleur's Bluff State Park (2130 Riverside Dr.). This annual event, put on by the grassroots National Alliance on Mental Illness, raises awareness for mental health. Free, donations encouraged; call 601-899-9058.

11 a.m., 2009 Poker Run for Shared Roads , at Got Gear Motorsports (230 Hwy. 51 N., Ridgeland). Raise awareness for motorcycles on Mississippi's highways and roadways by joining the 2009 Poker Run for Shared Roads. Motorcycles, hot rods, and cars welcome to participate. Approximately 120-mile suggested route and prizes for top three hands. $25, $20 early registration; call 601-383-8817.

6 p.m., "A Salute to Our Mississippi Heroes" at the Country Club of Jackson (345 Saint Andrews Dr.). The Brain Injury Association honors Dr. Ruth Fredericks, Wounded Warrior Carl Sampson, Nicole Marquez, Shirley Sampson, 172nd Airlift Wing and Dr. Huey McDaniel. $100; call 601-981-1021.
