Preservation (With Style)

Protecting one of the earth’s most vital resources, our oceans, isn’t a recent development, but The Great Eastern Garbage Dump in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is. The massive plastic heap (almost 1 1/2 times the size of the US) is growing larger every day due to our own poor habits and plastic dependence. This is the real deal: polluting the water, killing off sea life, and, ultimately, ending up back in our own systems. While we may not be able to get rid of the damage that's already been done, we can certainly stop it from growing any larger.

Of course, most of this can be remedied through our own consumption habits. Stop buying bottles of water and throwing away plastic. Fill a reusable aluminum bottle (such as Sigg) or a phthalate/BPA-free plastic version with water from the tap. Recycle as many plastic bags and containers you can through your community’s programs. And for god’s sake, bring your own canvas or nylon reusable bags to the grocery store. Reminding everyone how many of these are floating in the ocean becomes tiresome.

After all this preaching, however, there has to be a little fun now and then, right? Hell yes! And any time I can get my hands on a fun and stylish eco-alternative, I’m going to have to share it with y’all. Who says that enviro-friendly products should induce a snore?

Not I.

I came across a revolutionary company called Recycline whilst toothbrush browsing at Target a few weeks back. I will fully admit I’m a packaging junkie who prizes form just as much as function (yes, even in a toothbrush). So when I laid eyes on the company’s Preserve model, hanging right there between the Crest SpinBrush and Oral-B Cross Action, I think I may have actually swooned. Seductive and curvaceous, it is a toothbrush that will satisfy even the most refined aesthete. If the brilliant Swedes at Ikea made dental hygiene products, this is what they would look like.

Upon closer inspection, I found out that its design is not only beautiful, but also fundamentally green. How perfect. The company aims to maintain a light carbon footprint by keeping production localized (all US), using only 100% recycled plastics, and by teaming up with other companies (such as our fave yogurt maker Stonyfield Farm) to reuse each other’s plastic waste. Yogurt cups become toothbrushes, razors and tongue cleaners. Even the packaging is eco-intelligent: 100% recyclable and in some cases re-usable. Plastic toothbrush packages double as storage/travel cases. Paper inserts are created from 100% post consumer paper and printed with soy inks.

And when your bristles have seen better days? log on to: http://www.recycline.com/recycling.html where you can download a postage paid shipping label to send it back to the company, and they will turn your old brush into plastic lumber used for park benches, picnic tables and boardwalks.

Now that’s what I call a smart lil' toothbrush.

Oh yeah, did I mention they also make razors, kitchen gadgets and tableware? What are you waiting for? Get yours at Target, Walmart or online at http://www.recycline.com
