Gov. Haley Barbour has pulled himself up with constituents in the last two months, from a low of 37% approval in May to 41% approval in July, making him the 39th most popular governor in the Union, according to a monthly survey by SurveyUSA. Barbour leads five Democratic and six Republican governors in his race away from the bottom, including Texas "Guvner" Rick Perry (38% approval) and celebrated "Gov-or-na-tor" Arnold Schwartzenegger of California. Michigan's Jennifer Granholm is the lowest ranked Democrat on the list, at 45th Least Appreciated.

Apparently at least one older Starkville citizen isn't overly fond of Gov. Barbour right now (I think it has something to do with that cake she was told to eat)
STARKVILLE - Dorothy Bishop took her bed to the steps of the Oktibbeha County courthouse Tuesday with plans to stay until she gets some help. . . Bishop, 62, said she's running out of medicine and doesn't know how she'll get more. She said five of her 10 medicines are no longer covered by Medicaid . . .
One of Bishop's signs referred to the state's governor: "Hailey Barbour you have really hurt the elders"
"After paying for my medicines I can't buy clothes or food to eat," Bishop said.

He's getting thrashed in the media today - right and left (literally).
David Hampton says: At the time, Barbour critics were delighted and distributed the poll results. I was not surprised, however, and thought the disapproval rating might actually be higher. (Barbour's staff disputed the poll's accuracy). . . . I suspect what Barbour is saying and what voters are thinking are two different matters altogether.
Line between credit and blame for Barbour's cuts gets thin
Then in the Sun Herald, Barbour supporters wonder at priorities Georf Pender says, Gov. Haley Barbour may be weighing Coast anti-drilling sentiment against his future - national - political aspirations. . . "The business community, with a few exceptions, has been very solidly opposed to it . . . But even at the urging of some of his movers and shakers, Barbour has demurred.
After all that, there is Rita Schwerner Bender's letter to Barbour in the C/L - one of the best, most cogent and moving challenges to push for justice that I've ever read. She calls him down for embracing the CBF, for claiming the Killen trial 'closed the books' on crimes of the civil rights era, for dismissing Ben Chaney's feelings about him wearing the state flag with the cbf in the corner by saying "Tough.", for attending functions of the CofCC When called on your participation with the CCC, you publicly refused to apologize or disassociate yourself.
She ends with Please don't squander this moment by proclaiming that the past does not inform the present and the future.
Not a good press day for the gov. Ms. Bender hit him square on the head.

Yes, she did. I linked that under our After Killen piece. However, inevitably, the Ledge letters page will be filled with screeds telling her to go back from where she came.
Still, I'm very glad she published it. And I suspect it'll draw some good responses, too. It's about damn time we start talking openly about the Citizens Council/Sovereignty Commission/government conspiracy that helped all the violence and hate happen, and targeted people who tried to speak up.
