It’s Labor Day Weekend, Relax

Kick off Labor Day weekend by heading to Farish Street tonight for the Farish Street Heritage Festival. This event continues through Saturday with performances by 601, Big V Walker, Eddie Cotton, Cupid and Sugar Foot's Ohio Players on the main stage. Gates open at 4 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the gate. For a complete lineup visit the event's website. If you want to get fit, head the Adult Hip Hop Dance Classes at the northeast Jackson Courthouse Racquet and Fitness Club; Admission is $5 for ages 16 and older. If you are in the mood for live music, see "Ms. Sweetheart Jackie Bell" at Poet's II. On Saturday start your morning at LeFleur's Bluff State Park (115 Lakeland Terrace), with the Jackson Audubon Society's monthly bird walk at 8 a.m. The event is free, but a $3 car entrance fee is required. For more information call 601-956-7644. Get touch with your artistic side at the Adult Craft Camp Saturday through Monday at the Mississippi Craft Center; classes range from $100 to $400, call 601-856-7546 for more information. Or take the family to the Jackson Zoo (2918 W. Capitol St.) for Animal Enrichment Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and watch the animals eat special frozen treats. For a different kind of musical day, head to the Caribbean Labor Day Festival at Battlefield Park (953 Porter St.). The event's performers include Donovan Scott, ZeeDub, drummer Rufus and Hugh Addison starting at 11 a.m.; free. For more information call 601-506-3284. After dark, head out for a night on the town at Dick and Jane's house party with DJ Allen at 9 p.m. $6, $10 for ages 18 and up. 930 Blues cafe features Jackie Bell and Billy Winston at 9:30 p.m. admission is $10. Have brisket for lunch Sunday at Lumpkin's BBQ (182 Raymond Road) and let musicians Mac James and Randy entertain you as you eat from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Still hungry? Head to Winners Circle Park (100 Winners Circle, Flowood) for the Mississippi Stone Soul Picnic at 3 p.m. with entertainment from The Canton Spirituals, Da Minista, Dorothy Norwood and Benjamin Cone and Worship. It's free is open to the public. Call 601-992-6160 for more information.
