Byram Middle School Updates
Mrs. Myers' classes are demonstrating Newton's Laws of Motion and Mrs. Cliett's classes are videoing the demonstrations.

Mrs. White's Career Discovery classes have been outside with MS Varnell's classes to perform a mixture of competitive group activities that were used to illustrate team work and leadership skills. A videographer from Mrs. Cliett's class captured the activities on one of those days. Mrs. White's classes will also be integrating with Mrs. Dunigan's English class. The English assignment required research that was done in the Media Center. The students will be coming to Mrs. White for Microsoft Word instruction and to type their reports.

Mrs. Raymond conducted a Rock Fish Scholastic Olympics to review for everyone's Nine Weeks Test. The Rock Fish teachers submitted questions that would help their students with their upcoming tests. The winning team came from Mr. Lee's home room class. The Scholastic Olympic winning team was comprised of: Antonio Bell, Cameron Brooks, Morgan Catchings, Devlin Collum, Brielle Davis, Kayla Davis, Samantha Dear, Eclecius Franklin, Timothy Neyland, Ryan Williams, and Jaylyn Walker.

There will be a Veterans' Day Program on November 11, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. at Byram Middle School. Veterans, currently serving military personnel and the public are invited to share in remembering and honoring our veterans.

D.I.M.E. (Donations In support of Military Excellence) The Byram Middle School students will participate in a fund raiser by collecting dimes to help purchase a display case for Jack Lucas's leather vest. Jack Lucas is the youngest military personnel to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. A nameplate will be placed on the display case noting "Donated by Byram Middle School Students". The vest and display case will be presented to the owner of the Harley Shop at the Trail of Honor. Gary Road Intermediate will be hosting a Veteran’s Day Celebration on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 in honor of our local veterans. Ethan Mangum, a fourth grader at Gary Road Intermediate, is a very talented golf player. He started playing golf at the age of two, and he has been playing for seven years. He has played golf in Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia. In the past, Ethan has participated in the fall, winter, and summer golf tours in his age division. Previously, in 2006, he went to the World Championship in North Carolina and placed thirteenth out of one hundred and fifty players. In 2007, he went to California to the World Championship and placed sixth out of one hundred and fifth players. This year, Ethan won ten out of the fifteen tournaments during the fall tour; therefore, he had the opportunity to play at the Regional tournament in Biloxi, MS where he won first place. Now, he is going to the Philippines this month for the World Championship. GRI is very proud of his success and wishes him the best of luck in the Philippines!

Raymond Elementary School
In anticipation of the upcoming presidential election, the fourth and fifth graders of RES held a mock election. On Tuesday, students began registering to vote. They had to fill out voter registration forms and receive their voter registration cards before they were eligible for Friday's Presidential vote. In art class, students created campaign posters and voter buttons that were displayed school wide. On Friday, the students gathered at their designated precincts to cast their ballots during recess. The lines were long, but they persevered. The outcome was Barak Obama-66 and John McCain 36. Many were disappointed that they were not able to vote because they didn't register. They learned that every vote counts and you must do your part.

Our RES students and faculty celebrated Red Ribbon Week with these daily activities.

Monday: Hugs Not Drugs Day--Bring favorite stuffed animal to hug at school!
Tuesday: Put a Cap on Drugs Day--Wear your favorite cap or hat@
Wednesday: Give Drugs the Slip--Wear your slippers, silly ones if you can!
Thursday: Drugs Give Us the Blues Day--Wear blue, blue, blue!
Friday: Sock it to Drugs Day--Wear the silliest socks you can find or make!

On Friday, RES Kindergarteners took a trip to the Pumpkin Patch. They learned about different kinds of animals, where and how pumpkins grow, and they even got to choose a pumpkin to take home with them!

Every child in Mrs. Rhonda Wooten's second grade homeroom has met their AR goal. Congratulations!
