See power-pop band Luxury Sweets at Martin’s Thursday, July 24, as they play their first show in Jackson.

It’s a good opportunity to browse the new Mississippi Museum of Art photography exhibit this Thursday night during their monthly Jazz, Art and Friends installment with the jazz improvisation of Will Thompson, from 6-9 p.m. $7. Unwind after-hours with some jazz, and a cocktail or glass of wine, then look at 100 music-inspired photographs by John Cage, Lou Barlow and host of others in the “Sight of Music.”

While you are downtown Thursday, stay for a little power-pop indie rock at Martin’s, 9 p.m. with ¡los buddies!, Avenue Rose and Luxury Sweets. While touring from Austin’s Powerpop Festival to New York City, local favorites ¡los buddies! found these musical companions hailing from Olympia, Wash., and Santa Cruz, Calif. The show is sure to deliver contagious catchy tunes and the beautiful intensity of “London Calling” Clash-meets-The Animals. Show your support for Avenue Rose and Luxury Sweets’ first Jackson gig. Stream them on the web at
myspace.com/avenuerose and myspace.com/luxurysweets .
If you’re looking for a more chill vibe Thursday night, the free pick is Dead Irish Blues at Fenian’s for that old world Irish folk from 8-11 p.m.

You may not have heard much from once-local reggae mash-up master DJ C-Lecta since his home base moved to New York City. But you can catch him spinning Friday nights at Seven*Studioz this month. Show off your wits this Saturday night at the annual Pub Quiz Birthday Bash, followed by Southern Fried Karaoke with the JFP’s Donna Ladd and Todd Stauffer at Hal & Mal’s.

If you want to make the drive to get your alt.country fix, Blue Mountain will perform at the Neshoba County Fair this Saturday, July 26. But stay tuned and mark your calendar. Blue Mountain will be at Hal & Mal’s on Friday, Aug. 15. If you live for that Nashville singer-songwriter mastery, look no further than Nashville Night at the New Paragon Gin Company in Canton this Saturday evening. Bring your own bottle, chair or blanket (rain or shine) for Billy Henderson, A.J. Masters, Vera Monroe, Johnny Phillips, Shane & Frazier and Sweetwater Jade; 7 p.m., $15.

Sunday afternoon is the perfect day to bring the kids to see the animals and the Mississippi Improv Alliance at the Jackson Zoo from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be improvisation music, dance, comedy and other wild beasts on display for your amusement. Zoo admission is required.

Tickets are going fast to see actor/musician Billy Bob Thornton and his band The Boxmasters at Hal & Mal’s next Wednesday, July 30. Anything Billy Bob does is big, so it will be a tight rock ‘n’ roll show that will have you gawking at one of most famous actors in the world singing for your pleasure. The show begins at 9 p.m.; tickets start at $23.50.

If you missed Blind Melon at Jubilee!JAM, they are returning to Rick’s Café in Starkville on Wednesday, Aug. 13, $20. Tickets are available at rickscafe.net. B.B. King ֖and Willie Nelson will be at the Wharf Amphitheatre in Orange Breach, Ala. this Saturday night, July 26. Dave Matthews will join Willie on Aug. 2 in Memphis. If you haven’t been keeping up with Willie Nelson in recent years, check out his 2005 reggae cover album “Countryman,” including Jimmy Cliff’s “The Harder They Come.” Remember Johnny Cash’s cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt?” Simply amazing. Check it out. Crosby, Stills and Nash bring the harmonies to Beau Rivage in Biloxi, Aug. 6. The Hold Steady and the Loved Ones will rock out Proud Larry’s in Oxford, on Thursday, Aug. 8. Cheers.
