JFP Opens Hurricane Gustav Info Wiki on Jackpedia

National Weather Service
Hurricane Gustav

As we did for Katrina in 2005, the Jackson Free Press will provide staff- and user-generated communications for resources needed in the wake of Hurricane Gustav to help connect people who want to help with those who need it. This time around, we are using a dedicated section of Jackpedia, the Jackson, Miss., wiki powered by the JFP. Please help us load up Gustav resources before the storm hits, and as you have access, we invite you to use Jackpedia as a way to communicate about needs for resources, housing, volunteers and information during the storm and its aftermath. See a long list of categories and links already posted to see what you can add to the Gustav wiki. Or e-mail us information at , so we can post it for you. In the event that the JFP loses power, people outside the area will help us access e-mails and update the site.

Our prayers are with our neighbors to the south, and in areas already devastated by Gustav, including Cuba and Jamaica. God speed.

What has the CL done to it's online paper?? I don't like the new format at all. I guess i will have to buy a paper on occasion if I want to know what is going on on a daily bases.

This was posted in the forums late last night:

I know this is a longshot but. . .

My uncle, a photo editor for the new orleans times picayune and native jacksonian just called me. He has a collegue who asked him to help with his situation. His wife is gravely ill and needs daily medical attention, ie blood platelets or something like that. They have been ordered to evacuate to Jackson to continue her treatments during the storm. They have found a place in Richland, but need a place for their two grown daughters, ages 22 and 24 as well as a sister. That’s three people in all.

I wish I could help them, but I have other family evacuating to my house. Do any of you know of someone who can help them? Maybe through a church or another organization? All the hotels are full.

Much thanks in advance,
Heather

News Advisory

JACKSON, Mississippi - Governor Haley Barbour will remain in Mississippi and not travel to the Republican National Convention until after the effects of Gustav and Hannah are known - and then only if Mississippi is in the clear.

Media with questions may contact Pete Smith, Press Secretary, at 601.720.8733.

We've just posted detailed information about "special needs" shelters in the Jackpedia Gustav resource guide.

Remember, you can add and request resources yourself over there.

And the recent changes are feeding back to the JFP HurricaneBlog. We will also send out regular e-mails to our mailing lists (local and national) about both needs and available resources.

(Although we pray we don't need to this time around.)

Good move on Barbour's part. It would not look good if he left right now.

I'm watching the Weather Channel, and Gustav is going through Cuba now. Hanna is entering the Bahamas, and another storm system is forming behind Hanna. Batten down the hatches.

There's a mandatory evacuation for those still living in FEMA trailers. I'm really concerned about them. What if the trailers are destroyed and they have to start over yet again? Time to pray.

Also, bottled water is getting scarce, so get it while you can. Now.
