City of Raymond Proclaims National Chemistry Week

[Verbatim] Local students presented signatures to Raymond’s Mayor and Board of Aldermen at the Oct. 7, 2008, board meeting. The students collected community signatures to show support for a resolution to proclaim October 19-25 National Chemistry Week in Raymond. National Chemistry Week is a community-based event that is sponsored by the American Chemical Society every year. This year’s activities with include Hinds Community College chemistry faculty and students visiting classrooms at Raymond Elementary, Central Hinds Academy, and the after-school programs at Raymond United Methodist Church, The Learning Tree, and Rachel Gill’s Child Development Center.

“Having a Ball with Chemistry” is the 2008 theme and will focus on giving children of all ages an opportunity to have fun and to learn about the diverse careers that are possible in chemistry as well as the diverse people in those careers. This year marks the 21st anniversary of National Chemistry Week which shares the importance of chemistry in our everyday lives and how our lives have been improved by developments in chemistry.

National Chemistry Week is an outreach program of the American Chemical Society aimed at improving the public’s awareness of chemistry’s contributions to our everyday lives and its importance to the nation’s economy.
