Bush Doesn’t Mention Katrina Recovery

AP is reporting tonight that Bush did not mention Katrina recovery a single time in his "State of the Union" address. Maybe he just forgot. AP:

New Orleans is still a mess and the pace of recovery across the Gulf Coast from Hurricane Katrina’s strike remains achingly slow after 17 months. But none of this captured President Bush’s attention on the year’s biggest night for showcasing policy priorities. In the president’s State of the Union speech last year, delivered just five months after the disaster, the devastation merited only 156 words out of more than 5,400. The president spoke tonight for just about as long before a joint session of Congress. But his remarks, as prepared for delivery, showed Katrina rating not a single mention.

I'm not surprised. Sometimes the best thing to do is shut up. I doubt there is anything he could say on the topic that would please anyone on either side of the aisle. The whole thing from start to finish is a fiasco.

"Please" people? It's too late for that; I'd settle for acknowledgement out of basic human respect. Now he's publicly ignoring the Coast like he did Osama bin Laden for so long.

I'm so disgusted with his administration's Katrina performance I there is nothing he could say that would interest me. Nothing at all. There is more than enough there to criticize there if you are a liberal or conservative.

I see your point. But I still think it would have been respectful. It's not like he's not being criticized for everything he did address.

you have a point.

I wll quote an individual after Katrina and the resulting utter failure of the federal government.
"I would truly LOVE to believe that my government would have responded in the same manner if the zip code hit was an EXTREMELY wealthy 99% white zip code in Connecticut. I wish I could believe it was pure incompetence. I am wishing for incompetence.... How sad is that."

One thing is certain. New Orleans and much of the Gulf Area is far too poor for Bush's concern.

"we need more help from the government" Give a man a fish and he eats once, Teach a man...well, you know the rest. Is this really the Bush Admin's fault? Is there money that is being held back for legit projects? Can anyone in N.O. do anything for themselves? Im not a Bush fan I'm just asking.

Hasn't Bush already shown how he feels about the Katrina matter. Didn't he almost let them die in the aftermath from starvation, dehydation, chaotic crime, sickness, violence and drowning? Didn't he say Bernie was doing a great or good job. Case closed. He doesn't give a flying ____ about them! Ain't no help on the way!

Put the blame where it belongs. Louisiana has been more concerned with bickering and blame than actually solving their problems.

MS hit the ground running to help it's people, and they had the same gov't to deal with as LA. Maybe it's a competency issue over in LA?

Maybe Edwards can go shovel some more mud down there!?! That'll make it all better.

Come on Pike, your president is a careless and aristocratic dipstick. We all know it by now. I bet he had Katrina written into his speech but decided to forego it no doubt figuring he had already sold more crap and wolf tickets than he expected too. I bet he said I better quit before the cat jumps back out the bag. That cat was those papers he barely had the nerves to look at. He looked and sounded fairly well last night. I'll give you and him that.

I live in Louisiana, Baton Rouge to be exact, and I will tell you that Kathleen Blanco needs to stop pointing her finger everytime something comes up. They've been allowing some of this recovery money to be used to make Baton Rouge's quality of life better because they believe New Orleans was in the spotlight too much. It is like two angry siblings bickering. Not only did Louisiana still the Katrina Cottages idea from Mississippi, which is what started this whole finger pointing and saying, WE HAD 70% of the damage, but they are probably going to use the money they got for health systems to build LSU and new hospital in Baton Rouge. To say that they deserve more money because of more damage is sadly wrong. They haven't even issued the current money recieved to the city of New Orleans. Yes Bush is an idiot and I don't like him just as much as the next man, but there has been too much bickering in Louisiana over the current money. The road home program... They haven't helped nearly enough people get home. I'm sure that when this state (the one I'm in) get's off there asses and stop bickering over money and just send it to New Orleans like it originally should have we will see beneficial changes in New Orleans. If they don't do it soon then New Orleans may never get the money it needs because in 2010 they'll be redistricting because of the census.

Ray:

everything optimistic says is true. Bush deserves to be slammed over it as well but he damn sure isn't alone in this fiasco. Road Home program paying 760 million to a company to administer 7 billion in homeowner grants. Nice work if you can get it. Less than ten mill has been awarded. Shaw received 130 dollars A SQUARE FOOT to provide the blue roofs, what they did was go hire subs to do it for less and then pocketed the money, you would not believe the incompetence and graft going on right now in Louisiana. A pox on Bush, FEMA, Blanco, Nagin, and the rest of them.

oh, and lets not forget Jefferson during the flooding diverting national guardsmen to his home to retrieve his personal possessions while people needed to be rescued.
