The Sun Herald has an update on this story today:

Titanium tetrachloride vapors leaked from a small hole in a pipeline at DuPont around 9 a.m. Monday, according to the state Department of Environmental Quality.

Once in the air, titanium tetrachloride - a toxic chemical that can be fatal if inhaled - mixes with water vapors to create hydrochloric acid, a corrosive that in high concentrations can burn the skin or even cause suffocation.

According to air-monitoring tests conducted by DuPont officials, no harmful chemical vapors were released into the surrounding community.

The leak lasted for about 30 minutes and local fire departments and medical teams were put on standby, but no all-out evacuations were ordered, according to MDEQ and DuPont.

"We are trying to find out why they had a failure in the line," said Earl Etheridge, MDEQ's on-site coordinator. "It was a real small hole, about the size of a pinhole."
