Biz Roundup: Mimi’s to Close

Jim and Linda Burwell plan to close Mimi's Family and Friends Feb. 29.

After almost two years in Fondren, Mimi's Family and Friends (3139 N. State St.) will close at the end of next month.

Linda Burwell, who owns the restaurant with her husband, Jim, said they chose not to renew the lease on the property that runs out in March.

"We're just not making enough money to make it feasible to be here two more years," she said. "When we opened, the economy was a mess, and we were hoping it would get better and thinking it would, and it never did."

Burwell said for now she and Jim are focusing on finding jobs for their employees. They also wanted to give people time to use their gift certificates and stop by before they close.

It's too early to think about what they will do after closing the restaurant, Burwell said.

"I'm going to take a couple months off and get some stuff done in the house that I haven't gotten done in the past two years," she said.

Mimi's Family and Friends is open Monday-Saturday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Jackson Chamber's annual meeting
The Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership will hold its annual meeting tomorrow, Jan. 25, featuring an update on the metro area's 10-year long-range community plan.

Speakers include Gov. Phil Bryant; Paul Moak, the partnership's 2011 chairman; and Mayo Flynt, 2012 chairman.

The event is open to the public, and doors open at 11 a.m. Tickets are $50. For information, call 601-948-7575.

'The Help' gets Oscar nods
Nominations for the Academy Awards were released this morning and "The Help," set and partially filmed in Jackson, got four nods, including a nomination for Best Picture.

At the Golden Globe awards last month, "The Help" received five nominations, and Octavia Spencer took home an award for her portrayal of Minny Jackson in the film.

The 84th Academy Awards will air Feb. 26 on ABC.

Sustainable Communities
The Mississippi Development Authority plans to award $50,000 worth of grants to cities, counties and rural communities to help foster sustainable-energy planning.

Grants for Sustainable Communities programs will range from $5,000 to $20,000 and will fund energy efficiency projects in programs, buildings and transportation, a statement from MDA said.
