Baptist Hospital Gets Top National Ratings

October 14, 2009

HealthGrades, a leading independent health care rating organization, has awarded Jackson's Baptist Medical Center more five-star ratings than any hospital in Mississippi, and ranks the center among the top 10 percent in the nation for vascular surgery, and gastrointestinal surgery and care.

"Our successes are made possible because of our team approach, which integrates our clinical staff with our dedicated medical staff," said Baptist Chief Medical Officer Dr. Eric McVey in a statement. "This study validates our efforts to improve quality and illustrates our focus on patient safety."

Baptist achieved five stars in carotid surgery, treatment of bowel obstruction, gallbladder surgery, prostatectomy and total knee replacement.

Every year HealthGrades ranks America's hospitals for quality of care. Top-rated hospitals have a 52 percent lower mortality rate than the U.S. national average, according to the 12th annual "Hospital Quality in America" study. And when the top-rated hospitals were compared to the poorest performers, there was an even greater difference: 72 percent lower mortality.

"This honor shows Baptist's commitment to strive for excellence," McVey said. "As we move forward, we will continue to focus investments in the latest, innovative technology, enhancing our facility and advancing our clinical expertise. This will enable us to sustain and increase positive outcomes."
