189,817 New Mississippi Voters Since Jan. 1

Kenya Hudson
Mississippi has almost 200,000 new registered voters, many African American and young supporters of Barack Obama.

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann's office has released the following update on the number of new registrations. Note that he advises you to check your registration with the Circuit Clerk's office if you registered when you got your license. We're not sure why.

New Voter Registrations from January 01, 2008 – October 4, 2008:
(From the beginning of the year to the deadline to register to vote in the 2008 General Election)
189,817

ere are some important reminders as we head toward the 2008 General Election:

*Absentee Ballot Deadlines: The deadline for submitting your absentee ballot in the Circuit Clerks Office is Saturday, November 1, 2008. However, some counties might be closed on Saturday, which would make the deadline Friday, October 31, 2008. Mail-in absentee ballots must be received into your local Circuit Clerk’s no later than 5:00 pm, Monday, November 3, 2008. The hand-delivery of an absentee ballot is prohibited.

*DPS Registrations: If you registered to vote with the Department of Public Safety (DPS), we advise you to confirm your registration with your Circuit Clerk before Election Day. If for any reason your name is not listed on the voter rolls, we ask that you have your Circuit Clerk contact our office, and we will verify your information with DPS.

*Early Voting: Currently, Mississippi does not have early voting.

*Campaign Prohibitions: Candidates for an elected office, or their representatives, may not post or distribute, cards, posters or other campaign literature within 150 feet of any entrance in which an election is being conducted. It is also the position of the Secretary of State that the wearing of a t-shirt, button, sticker, etc., within 150 feet of any entrance in which an election is being conducted constitutes the posting of campaign literature and is prohibited.

*Filming by the News Media: According to an opinion issued by the Office of the Attorney General (to Benton Sanford, April 4, 2008), television crews are allowed to briefly tape the activities at polling locations, provided the personnel operating the cameras do not cause any intimidation or disturbance and limit such taping to only a few minutes.

29 counties have more registered voters than population.

From that article:

Despite the inflated voter rolls, "it's important not to leap to the conclusion that this means there have been many illegitimate voters," said Adam Skaggs, an attorney at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law.

He said the bigger problem - in Mississippi and across the U.S. - is that people have not registered at all or don't know they have been purged from the rolls.

In Mississippi, AP's county-by-county analysis compared voter registration figures released Thursday by the secretary of state's office with Census figures from 2000, which provide the latest and most detailed information for the entire state.

It is important to remember, Harry, that (a) voter fraud is not the same thing as faulty applications, (b) many voter records are not purged, and sadly when they try to, it's usually Republicans trying to purge 10s of thousands of eligible voters in one swoop and (c), sadly, I don't trust anything Delbert Hosemann says or releases at this point. He hasn't earned our trust with his stunts to date.

Will he be the new Katherine Harris? He seems to be auditioning for it. Needs more blush, though.
