The holidays are over, and you’re getting back into the day-in, day-out routine. You’ve probably already hit up the calendar looking for events for your next day off. The post-holiday blues are in full effect, but you can still escape your routine with a few hours of live, local music. As we hit the stands Wednesday, Cary Hudson plays free at Fenian’s tonight, 9 p.m. You probably know this southern roots-rocker as the frontman for Blue Mountain. His acoustic stylings are perfect for the intimate Fenian’s vibe. If you like Blue Mountain, mark Jan. 23 on your calendar to see the full ensemble at Hal & Mal’s.
Thursday nights are Irish Night at Fenian’s. This Thursday, catch the Irish dance regional favorites Legacy at 8 p.m. The good times at Fenian’s continue Friday as Texas Americana/folk singer-songwriter Kristy Krüger plays. Try her on at kristykruger.com. And as always, there’s never a cover.
Also Friday, this weeks’ One to One Studio showcase kicks off at 9 p.m. with Apache Valentino, The Quills and The Da Vincis. The Quills rock out their line-up with Andrew and William Fox (formerly of King Elementary) and Misha Hercules. The Da Vincis appeal more to the indie-pop sensibility, but it’ll be a full night of high-energy indie-rock and catchy hooks well worth checking out. You can check out all three bands on MySpace.
The Friday night Cucho’s Groove show at Jazz & Java Coffeehouse in Madison has been canceled. Jazz & Java has (next to Bonefish Grill) closed its doors. But, you may know Cucho Gonzales as the frontman for Latinismo!, Los Papis or his work with Dreamer. Cucho pulls in a lot of local Latin talent in any of his incarnations. It’s always a good time. You can catch Latinismo! as the first band to perform for the grand opening for the Jackson Convention Center Complex next Saturday, Jan. 17, 10:30 a.m.
This Saturday night offers something for everyone. Tickets are $20-$50 (students $5) for the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra’s Bravo III concert at Thalia Mara Hall, 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature world-renowned soprano Kallen Esperian for a Verdi overture, Strauss and a tribute to German Romanticism. Esperian has performed numerous times with Pavarotti and won awards throughout the world. Purchase tickets at msorchestra.com or call 601-960-1565.
Martin’s this Saturday night will feature indie-alt. rockers Roosevelt Noise and the cello-driven roots-rock favorites Passenger Jones. These are two of Jackson’s most solid candidates to break into the national scene. Passenger Jones guitarist/frontman, Taylor Hildebrand, has sonorous, emotional vocals that are amazingly original with some Dave Matthews overtones. If you wondered who is next in line to take up the best up-and-coming indie rock mantle after bands like Colour Revolt and King Elementary, it just may be Roosevelt Noise. These cats have tight instrumentation and high-energy anthems that fall somewhere between X, The Pixies and Merge/Teenbeat bands like Versus. If you miss Roosevelt Noise at Martin’s, they will be at One to One Studios Jan. 22.
