[todd] Cellphones “Possibly Carcinogenic”

AP is reporting that the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classifieds cellphones as "possibly carcinogenic," a label that it also applies to DDT and coffee. The Agency is an off-shoot of the World Health Organization. According to the story:

After a week-long meeting, the expert panel said there was limited evidence cellphone use was linked to two types of brain tumors and inadequate evidence to draw conclusions for other cancers.

The dangers are assumed to be minimal and the ... read on »

[todd] The Conservative “War on Math,” Part One

Look, I get it. People want someone to blame, and you've got Obama right there. But this exchange on Facebook (names changed) the other day was a bit too much for me:

LED BULBS HIT 100 WATTS AS FEDERAL BAN LOOMS
(news.yahoo.com) Two leading makers of lighting products are showcasing LED bulbs that are bright enough to replace energy-guzzling 100-watt light bulbs set to disappear from stores in January. (Summary: The bulbs are 50 bucks currently.)

Ricky: Im going to buy a trailer of old bulbs ... read on »

[todd] Updating Emmerich’s Chart

I promised this a while ago and immediately began to dread the hours and energy it would take to plow through this. :-)

I think I've finally done the work here, though, and can present. So, without further ado, here is a look at my update to Wyatt Emmerich's infamous "Welfare" chart.

Note: for the backstory, read my original blog entry, the New Republic piece and Wyatt's original editorial, wherein he fairly succinctly states his thesis:

"You can do as well working one week a month at ... read on »

[todd] City of Jackson Releases Preliminary Storm Damage Map

According to a map published by the City of Jackson, last Friday's tornados tore a path across north Jackson, touching down and causing significant damage in at least five large areas.

The map is available here as a JFP image that will pop up in a new window: jackson_storm_map.jpg, or you can download the PDF (950kb) version of the city's map.

[todd] Wyatt Emmerich’s ‘Welfare’ Chart Dissected by The New Republic

With a hat-tip to Jay, we bring your attention to the story From Mississippi to ‘The Corner’: A Tale of Right-Wing Wrongness, where our star is none other than Northside Sun publisher Wyatt Emmerich.

The plot? It seems that Emmerich pulled together a chart a while back which he published in the Sun, asserting that a single-parent family making $14,500 a year (minimum wage) actually had more "disposable income" than that same family making $60,000 a year. His story was called "With Welfare It ... read on »

[todd] Mark Kelly at National Prayer Breakfast - Good Can Come From Tragedy

Caught in traffic yesterday (I was out trying to find salt for our steps in the ice) I heard Mark Kelly's speech at the National Prayer breakfast. (Obama also gave a great turn.) I think the speech is worth listening to, although I'm sure much of it will fall on deaf ears. The thing that hit me the hardest was when Kelly talked about how, as an astronaut, he'd learned that team-work is how you get things done in the face of problems or challenges.

Here's the whole thing... around 1:36:50 is ... read on »

[todd] Americans Support Repealing HCR? Not If You Ask Them…

When the newly-minted GOP decided that its first order of business was a largely ceremonial "repeal" of the Affordable Care Act, they did two things that may not auger well for their party's continued success in elections.

First... the bill's dumb name: "Repealing the Job-Killing Healthcare Law Act." In one fell swoop, the GOP made clear that today's conservatism has pretty much completely abandoned any pretense of being an intellectual movement. Buckley-esque conservatives might want to look ... read on »

[todd] GOP Rep Calls for Gun Ban; Gun Control Discussion Starting?

According to Politico.com, New York Republican Peter King plans to introduce a bill in the House that would make it illegal to carry a gun with 1,000 feet of high-ranking Federal officials, including members of Congress.

It’s unclear whether King’s legislation will see the light of day in the Republican-controlled House. But four days after a gunman killed six people and critically wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz., King is among a handful of gun control advocates still trying ... read on »

[todd] Saints v. Seattle Preview: Run Reggie, Run!

The question on the mind of Saints fans everywhere is probably a pretty straightforward one if they've watched the injury reports over the past few days... with Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory both out for the season, can Reggie Bush, former Heisman trophy winner (and returner) and #2 pick in the 2006 draft truly the franchise back for the New Orleans Saints? Can he run north and south? Is he a threat if the Saints give him 20-25 touches? Is he fully healed from the broken leg he suffered early ... read on »

[todd] Administration Reveals Deep Military Cuts; GOP Spends $1 Mil Reading Constitution

While the GOP spent its time today in the House reading a politically-corrected version of the Constitution for the cameras (at an estimated cost of $1.1 million) Raw Story reports that the Obama Administration has announced cuts to the military that nearly meet the GOP's first-year austerity pledge. Think they timed that one on purpose?

The $78 billion comes in addition to $100 billion in cuts that Gates directed the Pentagon to find in May. In a Thursday news conference, the defense ... read on »
