NPR reported this morning on last month's unemployment figures and updated numbers for June and July. Verbatim from their Web site:
August Unemployment At Five-Year High
The unemployment rate shot to a five-year high of 6.1 percent in August as employers slashed 84,000 jobs, according to a Labor Department report released Friday.
The report showed the increasing toll the housing, credit and financial crises are taking on the economy.
The jobless rate jumped to 6.1 percent in August, from ... read on »
From the Environmental Working Group's EnviroBlog (verbatim):
Good news for parents and children everywhere: Congress has agreed to a ban on three dangerous phthalates in products made for children under 12. The decision came in spite of the chemical industry's desperate (and well-funded) attempt to shut the provision down. Exxon-Mobil alone spent a significant portion of its $22 million lobbying budget on the project, according to Lyndsey Layton at The Washington Post.
The provision, which ... read on »
I just received word that there will be an interfaith candlelight vigil at Smith Park on Wednesday, May 21 beginning at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday is the day Earl Berry is scheduled to die at the hands of the Mississippi justice system.
Rev. Fred Hammond of the Jackson Universal Unitarian Church wrote the following regarding the death penalty and the Bounds family: "...the execution was to take place the end of October 2007. The Bounds family gathered to witness the execution, a horrible soul ... read on »
There are some sick puppies out there. This release from the Attorney General's office details an e-mail hoax that threatens the life of the recipient and demands payment:
[verbatim release] Jackson, Miss -- A threatening e-mail is making an appearance in Mississippi The e-mail is similar to other threatening hoaxes which have been reported in the state. Attorney General Jim Hood announced that his office has received several reports of an e-mail which involves a death threat to the ... read on »
This morning, I paid more than $52 to buy 3/4 of a tank of gas. Lucky for me that I live in Mississippi instead of San Francisco, where the cost of regular topped $4 per gallon this week. But the end isn't in sight, and despite the general outcry over the astronomical profits of the corporate oil giants, gas prices continue to climb. People are paying more than $100 to fill up their SUVs.
U.S. consumers are spoiled by the previous cost of cheap fuel. When I was in Austria two years ago, the ... read on »
[verbatim from AG's office] Attorney General Jim Hood, Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann and Better Business Bureau President Bill Moak are joining together with a host of private partners to help Mississippians tak a pro-active approach in the fight against identity theft.
Between eating and drinking out of plastics that leach, getting a bit of pesticides with our veggies and a few stray hormones in our burgers, we're all exposed to levels of toxins every day--they're unavoidable. And, depending on how our bodies react to them, toxins can drain our energy, make concentrating difficult and even make us feel chronically ill.
Last Thursday, I joined the JFP Lounge at Hal & Mal's in the smoke-free Oyster Room. Now, don't get me wrong; I love Hal & Mal's, and I love the comraderie of the JFP lounge. What I hate is the fact that every time I go to Hal & Mal's, whether for the red beans or an after-work cocktail, I have to deal with cigarette smoke. Occasionally, it gets to be too much temptation and I bum a smoke from another patron (I used to have a three-pack-a-day habit, so it's always an issue). Last Thursday, ... read on »
Alrighty all you proud Jacksonians. It's time once more to vote for the Best of Jackson. The first 2008 ballot is scheduled to appear in next week's issue (Oct. 31) of the Jackson Free Press, which means this is your last chance to add your favorite category-we-forgot to the list.
Right now, go to Jackpedia's New Best Of Jackson Categories and add your two cents. Do it now. Before Friday. Or it won't get in. Now.
I literally shouted expletives at my TV yesterday morning as I drank my coffee and watched the morning news. In an appalling display of hypocrisy, first lady Laura Bush landed in Abu Dhabi to promote breast cancer awareness in the Middle East.
