I just found the coolest posting ever on the blog of our new writer, Tiffany Fitch. The whole thing is delightful—and love her props to Rebekah's cover—but nothing beats this line:
"My mama's in the Jackson Free Press," little voices sang out from the backseat and I wished I could add my voice to them.
Welcome Tiffany (and Heather). So glad y'all are adding your voices, and spirit, to the JFP!
This column was published in March 2005. We bring it back forward in honor of St. Paddy's Day 2006—also known as The Chick Invasion. Enjoy.

No matter how many times I hear the words, I continue to catch my breath and steady the world at the very idea. “I just don’t get it,” they sometimes say. By “it” they are referring to what has become the “Million Queen March” at Mal’s St. Paddy's Day Parade, and by “they,” I mean people who just ain’t right.
All, be sure to check out the JFP Galleries for several packages of photos of last year's St. Paddy's madness in Jackson. We'll be out and about again this year collecting photos for a new round of galleries. So check back next week after the craziness subsides.

ACLU OUTRAGED IN THE IRRESPONSIBLE ACTION OF HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
Jackson, MS-- The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of MS is outraged by the recent vote of the Mississippi House of Representatives to ban abortions in the state. Not only does a ban on abortion threaten women’s health and lives, it is unconstitutional and will be challenged in court. Under current Supreme Court precedent, a ban on abortion will be struck down.

My boyfriend said the most disturbing thing on our way to Hooter’s. He said, “You and MF can’t make a mockery of my Corvette.” Are you kidding me? Now tell me that doesn’t sound like a challenge. My best friend MF and I can make a mockery of anything, including but not limited to Corvettes, Hooters, each other, ourselves and everyone around us. We’re that good.
Oct. 14, 2005—AP is reporting that the Tupelo wingnuts are at it again:
American Girl, manufacturer of a highly popular line of dolls and children's books, has become the target of conservative activists threatening a boycott unless the toy maker cuts off contributions to a youth organization that supports abortion rights and acceptance of lesbians. The protest is directed at an ongoing American Girl campaign in which proceeds from sales of a special "I Can" wristband help support ... read on »
AP is reporting:
Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers pledged support in 1989 for a constitutional amendment banning abortions except when necessary to save the life of the mother, according to material given to the Senate on Tuesday.
"If Congress passes a Human Life Amendment to the Constitution that would prohibit abortion except when it was necessary to prevent the death of the mother, would you actively support its ratification by the Texas Legislature," asked an April 1989 ... read on »

Back in my soccer mom days, I battled an addiction that my friends found somewhat disturbing. They’d beg me, plead with me even, to partake in moderation, to just put it away for a day and to find the true root of my problem. One friend now admits she even entertained the idea of staging a girlfriend intervention, a la Charlotte and her Rabbit on “Sex and the City.” But praise the Lord, it blew up in time to save me from the Betty.
Lakshmi Chaudhry writes for Alternet about women in the media:
Maureen Dowd recently made the startling discovery that she is indeed the only woman in The New York Times' roster of nine columnists. This sad state of affairs naturally inspired Dowd to dwell at length in a recent column on her own courage to be "mean."
"If a man writes a scathing piece about men in power, it's seen as his job; a woman can be cast as an emasculating man-hater," she writes, describing the many travails that ... read on »
