Pizza Shack?  Where’s that one?

It’s on North State Street, across the street from Baptist Hospital.  I’ve been there twice and love the food.

Went to Sal & Mookie’s for the JFP Lounge the other night and tried some fried ravioli...not too bad. They also had a spinach and onion pizza...I can do without it. I can see myself eating there again, though.

You should try the Turkey Lurkey.  That’s a big ol’ burger that’ll fill you up.  I tried the Brownstone panini the other night.  It was okay, but I think I needed more cheese.

Dennery’s is no more. The restaurant closed last week due to the owner’s retirement.

I don’t live in Jackson anymore; are there any new places that have opened up since December 2007? (the last time I’ve was home to see family for the holidays). I’ll be in Jackson in June and want to try out the latest place (not necessarily “fancy” or “the place to be seen,” but the cool joint with tasty items).

I regularly eat Thai and Indian food where I live and while certainly there is Thai House (very good stuff typically) I don’t “have” a go-to Indian restaurant in Jackson. Any recs? I used to eat at the one on Frontage Road back in the late 90’s but I believe it closed down several years ago.

I’d say Spice Avenue for Indian food, and for another option Pan Asia is pretty good, too. I ate there the other day for the first time since it opened, and I was very happy with my meal and with the martinis.

Tye’s is probably the newest restaurant I can think of—downtown on Congress St. in the Plaza building. It’s very good, the strawberry butter and bread alone is reason enough to check it out!

Edited to add (love that feature, by the way!): Can’t believe Dennery’s is closed. Not that I’d eaten there in years, but it was a mainstay in Jackson for as long as I can remember. RIP Dennery’s!!

Anyone ever had lunch at Peaches’ on Farish street? The smothered fried chicken is awesome.

The Thai House has moved north. It’s across the street from the new location for Cherokee--close to Kroger on I-55.

The Indian Restaurant on the I-55 Frontage Rd. (Ruchi) is still there (not closed). The newer Spice Ave. is just South of it. There are only 2, so try both. Ruchi has a lunch buffet option, Spice Ave is menu only.

Worth checking out is Tronco la Sabrosura, 729 Hwy 49 S., in Richland next to El Charro. “Carribean Cusine & Mexican Taqueria” . Let’s face it, its hard to find good Carribean food. You’ll find tacos with lamb, pork, shrimp, beef or Stew Cow’s Tongue. Tamales, Cuban Sandwiches, Menudo Cow Strip, BBQ Ribs, Goat and other meats in various sauces, lots of carribean fruit drinks and shakes ($2), 14 good looking seafood specialty dishes with a side of fried green plantains and beer. The most expensive seafood dish is $9. Most things are $4-$6. Divey hole in the wall atmosphere. Just started trying out the menu. Worth checking out if your looking for something you cant get elsewhere in Jackson. 601-420-5337.

I just hit the Tronco again this evening. I got the snapper filet with coconut milk sauce with their homemade hot sauce added to it; dirty rice (with the leftover sauces seeping into it; small green salad, and fried plantains for $10. Mango shake. One companion got the huge breaded chicken (added the homemade hot sauce) and vegatables; some exotic shake/juice fruit drink from Puerto Rico I have never heard of; while our 3rd companion got the cuban sandwich & Modelo. They do NOT take credit cards. Very eager to help you through the menu. They have some mexican dishes (Quesidillas, lamb & other tacos also since they opened May 1 (2008), but revamping to mainly Carribean by July 31 (Dominican, Puerto Rican, Cuban especially). Non-Mexican now they have about 8 fish dishes, 8 shrimp dishes, a dozen steak dishes, 6 chicken dishes all with various sauces. Plus sandwiches.
