Flower Girl Panic

When Bebo, my younger brother, proposed to his girlfriend Anna, they asked my 4-year-old and my 2-year-old to be flower girls. The girls were as thrilled as I was terrified. read more »

Avoiding Toddler Tragedy

An "adults only" ceremony sounds nice, but for many weddings, it's almost impossible to keep the little people away. So what's a couple-to-be to do? Here are a few tips to prevent a toddler tragedy on your wedding day. read more »

Gold and Orange and Red, Oh My!

When it comes to color, I’m usually an equal opportunist. But since fall officially arrived and the temperatures are changing, I seem to only be able to focus on one side of the color wheel. read more »

Sailing Our Own Race

"There's a feeling in the air ..." So starts a favorite Better than Ezra song that reminds me of fall. Lately, that feeling has made me want to get outside and enjoy the great weather that this time of year brings. But beyond football fields, I found myself drawn to water this fall. read more »

Armed and Dangerous

Leandra Medine, a New York City blogger also known as The Man Repeller, has termed the recent bracelet craze as an "arm party." And being that I'm a huge fan of both (over) accessorizing and The Man Repeller, I had to gather up some guests for a party on my arm—well, both arms! read more »

Booked Solid

It's been a few years since autumn meant back to school for me, but this year I've embarked on a semester as an adult learner. This adventure is courtesy of the Business Advantage Program at the Else School of Management at Millsaps College, in which 20 or so other professionals and I get 15 weeks of business classes two nights a week for three hours a night. It means that on the nights we don't have class, I have ... homework. read more »

Deep Awareness

In the fall of 1991, Deborah Harris, then 39, picked up a couple of muffalettas for lunch from a local restaurant in Shreveport, La. She went downtown to the rooftop of the First United Methodist Church to meet her new beau, David Dykes, then 48. Anxious about his leaving town that afternoon, a strange feeling started to come over Deborah as they ate and exchanged a few kisses on the rooftop. When they were done eating, David drove Deborah back to her office at Southern University, only a block away. read more »

Double Chic

Pampering the Self

Sometimes it's nice to get away and indulge yourself. I tend to joke that living and working downtown, where I walk everywhere, makes driving to the suburbs feel like a trip to a whole other country. I decided to make an excursion of sorts out of the experience and do some pampering to get ready for fall. read more »

A Girl’s Game-Day Gear

It's time for football, and the men in our lives can hardly contain themselves. Truthfully, the only things I'm excited about are my game-day looks. And although I'm not one to don official team gear, I do fully support wearing your team's colors. read more »

Take a Bite

"Eat that apple." It's a new catchphrase, coined during what started out as an evening catching up with friends over wine at Parlor Market (115 W. Capitol St., 601-360-0090), but turned into adoption of a new life philosophy. The friends in question wish to remain nameless, so I'll refer to them as B, who is my Only Child Soul Sister, and Mom o' Mia (Mia is a fluffy white dog, not a child). read more »

Among African Drumbeats

When you meet Kiwana Thomas Gayden, and Lorenzo Gayden, both 36, you can feel the vitality and energy the two create and pour into their interests, talents and their life together. When the two decided to get married, they pooled this energy and performed an exotic and vibrant wedding ceremony not normally seen in the United States. read more »

Man Shoes

Women. Love. Shoes. But we don't just love our own. We take notice in a guy's shoes, too. We get it when a fella is concerned about his kicks. I mean, who wants to be seen around town as best dressed, but only from the ankles up? read more »

Liquid Themes

Maybe it's all those lit classes in college, but theme is important to me—whether it's in writing, in one's wardrobe for the season or for a party. The past few weeks offered plenty of opportunity for Jacksonians to submerse themselves in a theme-based activity for a night (or day), and I happily joined in. read more »
