Corn mazes, hay rides, fresh pressed cider and pumpkins galore! It's that time of the year y'all; fall, is here. What better way to quench your thirst for all things apple, than going straight to the source? There's no place like an orchard or pumpkin patch to get you in the mood for autumn, and there's nothing that compares to the fruit you'll find there. Don't even think about grabbing a bunch from the supermarket for your next pie, cobbler or crisp; ... read on »

While the retail landscape is changing all over the Jackson metro area, the real renaissance has been happening in Fondren for years. There couldnt be a more apt benchmark to measure its success than Max Contemporary Furnishings in the Fondren Corner building. Five and a half years ago, design guru Tommie Goodman, 56, settled into the space after moving the store from Pear Orchard Road in Ridgeland, where it had been for 15 years. The punchy design ... read on »

Thrash metal is the perfect musical setting for the new residence of the Ink Spot. Hidden in the Foundry Lofts (formerly the Ironworks building) at 300 W. South St., the tattoo shop/art gallery is an oasis of free expression and courageous art. Demons, tigers, dolphins, beautiful women and skulls line the colorful brick walls. The art of Shannon Valentine is currently hanging in the gallery.

Autumn may not conjure images of ripe, juicy, tomatoes in most peoples minds. But the sight of a Campbells tomato soup can nearly always triggers a storm of nostalgic yearnings for September and after-school lunches in mine.
Take heed; nostalgia often obscures the painful shortcomings of our past, and turns them into something akin to pedestal-sitting perfection. Such, alas, is the way of my canned tomato soup and grilled cheese meals of yore. I ... read on »

I am a junkie. Thats right; addicted.
Right now, Im going through withdrawals. Havent had my fix this week. The dusty remnants of the last time hang in my nostrilsI cant control the twitching anticipation of my next hit. I fidget and toss around in my bed and try to make myself fall asleep.
My name is Brandi Herrera Pfrehm: I am addicted to The Salvation Army.
And Goodwill.

School days, school days...dear old golden rule days...
My fondest childhood memories of the month of September don't have anything to do with actually going back to school. Rather, all the really cool, new, gear you got to shop for in anticipation of the next ten months of reading, writing and arithmetic. 64 color jumbo Crayola pack? Check. Sweet new Muppets lunch box? Done. Hot backpack? Got it. Ask any ten year old and they'll agree: ... read on »

Da da da DA, da da DA
da da da DA, da da da da DA!
The Indiana Jones theme has become nearly as iconic as the films protagonist himself. At the sound of the lively Raiders March cadence, one cant help but conjure images of Harrison Ford wearing his signature khaki togs, leather bomber, and fedora. Indeed, for most of us weaned on a healthy diet of Spielberg action films, the song and emblematic trappings have become synonymous with archeological ... read on »

The ultimate [FLY] Guy, in addition to being well-read, well-kempt and well-muscled, is also well-prepared. Traveling, for instance, can be a tricky business, especially with the various language barriers out there. To be truly [FLY], its essential to travel off the beaten path and converse with questionable characters. Speaking of whom, here are Sir Scurvy Dog of the Seven Seas and Igor the Immense to help you along your way.

A lot of things keep people up at night these days: terrorism, recession, environmental catastrophe. But these arent the things I worry about. No, I worry more about zombies and the apocalypse that is sure to come one day if scientists keep up their horrible experiments.
