      <description>Alpha Kappa Alpha women throughout the world will lace up their pink and green shoes and walk to raise awareness about emotional, spiritual, and physical health. During this historic synchronized walk, AKA members around the world will take steps to increase knowledge regarding health and health disparities within the African American community. Sorority members, their families and friends will take a symbolic 1,908 steps (2 miles)&#151;to commemorate the founding year of AKA.  Participants will walk in the direction of Washington, D.C.&#151;the birthplace of the sorority.

As part of this historic event, the Jackson walk will also offer a voter registration drive and health fair. The health fair will include free screenings for: blood pressure, glucose and body mass index. Participants can also receive massages, information regarding mental health, HIV/AIDS, sickle cell disease and heart disease.   During this event, the sorority will also collect toiletries/personal care items to donate to local women shelters. All walk participants will receive a free pedometer.</description>
