Mississippi Arts Commission Call for Grant Applications: Feb 10 – Mar 1.; The deadline for organizations and individual artists is Monday, March 1. MAC awards grants that support a wide range of arts activities, from fellowships for professional artists to project grants for activities produced by community organizations. "Extreme Makeover: Lifestyle Edition": Feb 9 – Mar 2.; In the Owens Health and Wellness Center, room 212. Liturgical Dance Technique: Jan 26 – Mar 2.; The six-week class meets on Tuesdays. Participants will learn how to effectively structure their new dance ministry in the church or how to improve their current ministry. Governor's Conference on Tourism: Feb 28 – Mar 2.; In the BancorpSouth Conference Center. The purpose of the event is to educate attendees on how to attract tourists to their destinations. Cotton District Arts Festival Call for Entries: Feb 2 – Mar 5.; Area artists ages 18 and over can submit artwork for possible inclusion into the Juried Art Exhibition of the 2010 Cotton District Arts Festival in Starkville, Saturday, April 17 in the Historical Cotton District. Entries must be postmarked by March 5 at 5 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded in the categories of painting/drawing, sculpture and photography. "A Year with Frog and Toad": Feb 27 – Mar 7.; The New Stage Children’s Theatre production is based on the books by Arnold Lobel, The musical follows two great friends, the cheerful and popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad through four fun-filled seasons. Winter Figure Drawing Classes: Jan 4 – Mar 8.; The 10-week class will be held on Mondays. “Journey Stories – Coast Culture” Exhibit: Jan 23 – Mar 11.; The Smithsonian exhibition is an examination of the intersection between modes of travel and Americans' desires to feel free to move. Financial Assistance for Organic Farmers: Feb 8 – Mar 12.; The USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has over $900 thousand dollars to help Mississippi farmers produce organic products and to introduce growers to high tunnel structures that extend the growing season for crops. The deadline for landowners to apply for funds is March 12.; .; Free.

Jim Henson's Fantastic World: Dec 19 – Mar 14.; This exhibit offers a rare glimpse into the imagination and creative genius of the multi-talented innovator and creator of beloved characters like Kermit the Frog, Big Bird, and hundreds of others. From the beginning, the Mississippi-native expressed his ideas in incredible bursts of invention, through a variety of visual forms, clever dialogue, songs, comic bits, and animation. This exhibition presents original artwork, including drawings and cartoons, as well as other objects like puppets and movie props, all of which reveal the brilliant mind of their creator.; Mississippi Museum of Art.; $12 adults, $10 seniors, $6 students.

Fondren Art Gallery Art Contest: Jan 24 – Mar 15.; The juried contest is open to those 18 and older with cash prizes for the first and second place winners. The deadline for submissions is March 15. Annual Belhaven Student Exhibition: Feb 20 – Mar 22.; (Opening reception is Feb. 20, 2–4 p.m.) This annual exhibition of student works highlights a wide range of styles and media including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, and mixed media. The opening reception will also feature live music by Belhaven’s own jug band, Uncle Mac and the Jackson Jug Revival.; Belhaven University - Bitsy Irby Visual Arts and Dance Center.; Free.

Footsteps in Hope Walk Fundraiser: Feb 12 – Mar 28.; The 8K walk/run on March 28 at 2 p.m. is in support of HIV/AIDS projects such as Grace House in Mississippi and Old Mutare Voluntary Counseling and Testing Center in Zimbabwe. PBS Kids Go! Writers Contest: Jan 27 – Mar 31.; Children in kindergarten through 3rd grade can submit their own original stories with illustrations and the official entry forms to Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB). First, second and third place winners will be chosen for each grade level and given special prizes. Winners also will be invited to an awards celebration held May 10 and have their stories recorded on MPB Radio. MPB’s first place winners will advance to the national competition where they will compete for prizes such as laptops, digital cameras and MP3 players. National Youth Art Month Exhibit: Mar 1 – Mar 31.; In celebration of National Youth Art Month, the library will showcase almost 300 pieces of artwork from students across the Pearl Public School District. "Backyards and Beyond": Mar 1 – Apr 1.; The traveling exhibition of over 80 paintings and sculptures by well acclaimed Mississippi artist H.C. Porter is paired with audio recordings. The focus of the exhibition is life after Hurricane Katrina on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Proceeds benefit the non-profit organization Backyards and Beyond. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.; Arts Center of Mississippi.; Donations welcome.

4th Annual Creative Arts Festival: Feb 16 – Apr 8.; The theme is "The Sit-in Movement and Student Activism Fifty Years Later." The festival begins at 3 p.m. on April 7 and 8 a.m. on April 8. High school and college students have until March 1 to submit art, spoken word and essays for judging and awards. Speakers include Dr. Leslie McLemore and Dr. Jerry Ward.; Jackson State University.; Free.

Celebration of Strong Women Call for Nominations: Feb 18 – Apr 8.; There are five different categories which include Defender, Mentor, Leader, Perseverance and Promise. Acoustic Guitar Class for Beginners: Mar 1 – Apr 10.; Learn the basic of playing the guitar during this six-week series. Classes are one hour long and will be given on Mondays from March 1-April 5 at 4 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. and Saturdays from March 6-April 10 at 10 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Youth and adult sessions are available.; B.B. Scriptapalooza Call for Entries: Feb 15 – Apr 15.; Entries for the international screenplay competition must be received by April 15 and will be reviewed by a manager, agent or producer at 90 participating companies including Disney and Miramax. Power APAC Exhibit of Scholastics: Feb 7 – Apr 18.; Artwork by gold and silver key winners of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards will be on display. An awards ceremony will be held on April 18. "Just Dance" Call for Entries: Oct 5 – May 7.; To commemorate the International Ballet Competition's return to Jackson, the Greater Jackson Arts Council is calling for entries to its juried invitational in media such as painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, film/video, mixed media and installation. Only photos, digital prints or digital files will be accepted; no slides or original artwork. Artists may submit up to three entries. Samples will not be returned. "Mound Bayou: The Promise Land, 1887-2010": Feb 1 – Jul 31.; See photographs of the beginning of Davis Bend, the move and name change to Mound Bayou, Isaiah Montgomery, T.R.M.
