The brainchild of Unity Mississippi and the result of an 86% approval rating of a constitutional amendment that intentionally limits marriage between a man and a woman, OUToberfest is a celebration of the Mississippi lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/transexual, and queer community (and our friends) and features many local and national organizations, groups, businesses, artists, musicians and more. It is also the state's first National Coming Out Day celebration of its kind. Details, including performance lineup, to be announced later.

Breaking the Silence: Immigration Issues and Domestic Violence

Each quarter, the Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence (MCADV) will host an informative presentation on issues related to domestic violence. The Coalition will begin its "Breaking the Silence" series with a presentation on "Immigration Issues & Domestic Violence," presented by Julieta Méndez, the Program Director of the Immigration Clinic at Catholic Charities .

This “Black Bib Event,” will benefit the March of Dimes mission to prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. TV Personality Maggie Wade and Radio DJ Scott Steele will be the evening’s hosts. Local chefs featured include Dan Blumenthal, BRAVO!; Grant Nooe and Francis Mo, Pan Asia; Olga & Yuri Abramvich, Olga’s Restaurant; Andy Cook, The Parker House; Gary Hawkins, The Fairview Inn & Sophia’s Restaurant; Chris Sartin, Soulshine Pizza Factory; and Shane Burns, Steamroom Grille. These chefs will prepare delicious cuisine paired with wines from E&J Gallo in a chef sampling beginning at 6:30 p.m. The event will also feature Boo Noble, Que Sera Sera; Ken Crotwell, Foodies; Ginger Watkins, Haute’ Pig Restaurant; Chris Jacobs, Sportsman’s Lodge; Dianne Alford, Two Sisters’ Kitchen; John Pelton, River Region Health Systems; and Tony Harris, St. Dominic Health Services. Called the “new atheism” because of its resurgence and popularity, it has attracted a great deal of attention. But is there anything “new” about it? Are there new scientific discoveries or political realities that provide new evidence for atheism? Or is it all old ideas with new marketing? Join us as we cover all this, including the history of atheism, the current influence and power of atheism, and the strength of the “new atheist” arguments. Upton Tire Pros Sun King Memorial 5K Race and Walk and 1 Mile Fun Run

The course will start and finish at St. James Episcopal Church in the historic Fondren Neighborhood. The Sun King 5K was originally organized and run in memory of Ernest Davidson whose life was tragically ended in 1999. Because Ernest was an avid runner and triathlete, family and friends could think of no better tribute than to organize a race in his memory. All monies raised from the Sun King 2008 will benefit Habitat for Humanity. NAMIWalks Walkathon

The goals of the NAMIWalks, NAMI’s signature walkathon event, program are to fight the stigma that surrounds mental illness, to build awareness of the fact that the mental health system in this country needs to be improved and to raise funds for NAMI so that they can continue their mission. NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the largest education, support and advocacy organization that serves the needs of all those who’s lives are touched by these illnesses. This includes persons with mental illness, their families, friends, employers, the law enforcement community and policy makers. The NAMI organization is composed of approximately 1100 local affiliates, 50 state offices and a national office.
