Orchestra Concert: Sat, Nov 7, 7:30 pm.; The Belhaven String Chamber Orchestra conducted by Mr. Song Xie will present “The Landing” by Belhaven music professor Dr. Andrew Mark Sauerwein and “Sinfonia for String Orchestra” from String Quartet No. 8, Op. 110 by Dmitri Shostakovich. These profound compositions elicit thoughtful reflection. After intermission, the Belhaven College and Jackson Community Symphony Orchestra conducted by Dr. Stephen Sachs will present Peter Tschaikovsky’s powerful masterwork “Symphony No. 4 in F minor.; Belhaven College Center for the Arts Concert Hall.; Free.

"Name Change: One Artist, Twelve Personas, Thirty-Five Years": Aug 1 – Nov 29.; Thornton Modestus Dossett is the eighth name Ed McGowin legally adopted between Oct. 1, 1970, and March 20, 1972. Ed went on to legally change his name a total of twelve times in this period. A world traveler, McGowin has immersed himself in cultures removed from the Western art styles and sought to approach art more directly, borrowing from tribal and ethnic traditions.; Mississippi Museum of Art.; $5 adults, $4 seniors, $3 students.

"Mississippi Invitational": Aug 1 – Nov 29.; Initiated in 1997, this exhibition is the seventh to survey recent developments by artists living and working across the state and includes work in diverse materials. Selected by New York-based curator, author, art critic and practicing artist Peter Plagens, the exhibition is organized by the MMA and accompanied by an illustrated catalogue for purchase.; Mississippi Museum of Art.; $5 adults, $4 seniors, $3 students.

"Legacy of Timbuktu: Wonders of the Written Word": Jan 1 – Jan 1.; In the last millennium an important global legacy was uncovered: the literate culture of Africa. Merriment on the Midway: Eudora Welty's State Fair Mural and Photographs: Sep 26 – Jan 3.; Eudora Welty's mural depicting Mississippi State Fair festivities is the centerpiece of this installation. Fifteen photographs taken by Welty at the traditional Mississippi event accompany the mural. Welty's fascination with the fair and all the excitement one can experience on the midway come through in these images of fairgoers, animals, sideshows and carnival rides.; Mississippi Museum of Art.; Free.

"Monsters of the Deep: Aquatic Giants in Flesh and Bone": Jun 13 – Jan 8.; This exhibit shows visitors giant creatures from the deep, ranging from prehistoric animals to the whales, sharks and turtles in the world's waters today.; Mississippi Museum of Natural Science.; Free.

"Back to Nature": Jul 2 – Feb 1.; Photographers are invited to submit photos of scenes from around and inside the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, with the winners receiving awards and having their work displayed in the museum.; Mississippi Museum of Natural Science.; Free.

"Just Dance": Oct 5 – Apr 30.; To commemorate the International Ballet Competition's return to Jackson, the Greater Jackson Arts Council is calling for entries to its juried invitational in media such as painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, film/video, mixed media and installation. Only photos, digital prints or digital files will be accepted; no slides or original artwork. Artists may submit up to three entries. Samples will not be returned.
