[Editorial] Save ‘Violence Against Women Act’

April 11, 2012

Next on conservatives' list of things to drown in the bathtub of "big government extravagance" is the Violence Against Women Act. Bill Clinton signed VAWA into law in 1994, providing just over $1.5 billion to help investigate and prosecute perpetrators of violence against women, to provide grants for education about domestic violence and to help shelter women from abusers. Congress reauthorized the act in 2000 and 2005.

[Barkley]  Act on Your Beliefs, Guv

by Whitney Barkley
January 18, 2012

While poring over Gov. Barbour's statement on "Pardongate," I found something I never expected: a point of agreement. And no, it wasn't just the part where he admitted he wasn't perfect (although I wholeheartedly agree with that as well).

[Editorial]  Barbour’s Shameful Pardons

January 11, 2012

We first heard that then-Gov. Haley Barbour had pardoned another wife-killer Saturday night on WLBT after the Saints game. From there, the news snowballed, with another wife-killer added to the mix, culminating in a list of more than 200 pardons and grants of clemency that we were trying to sort through as the paper went to press.

[Editorial]  Please Help

July 6, 2011

In a wonderful act of synchronicity, the Jackson Free Press, the Center for Violence Prevention and its director, Sandy Middleton (story), all found one another back in 2004. Under Middleton's direction, the center has become a force in the movement to end domestic violence in the state of Mississippi.

[Kamikaze]  Here’s to You

by Kamikaze
July 6, 2011

My youngest daughter is now 15 months old. Though it's been fun to share all her adorable moments with you guys via Facebook, my thoughts often turn to more serious pursuits. As the father of a 17-year-old daughter and now my youngest little girl, I try to exert as much influence as I can. Fathers are often the first real male influence girls recognize so it's important that I help them…

[White]  The War at Home

by Brianna White
July 6, 2011

After my uncle's first deployment, he was a different person. His temper was short, and he berated my aunt about the changes she made in his absence. He wanted her to stop working and stay at home. When I came to visit, we weren't allowed in the house if he was there. All of his actions were a part of his attempt to regain control. My aunt never called the…

[Editorial]  Of Contracts, Broken

February 16, 2011

Over the past few weeks, the Mississippi Legislature has bandied about a few anemic attempts at strengthening laws protecting victims of domestic violence. Among them is an addition to the state’s divorce laws that would allow judges to grant a divorce if a couple has not been cohabiting for at least five years.

[Editor’s Note] The Art of Denial

by Lacey McLaughlin
October 6, 2010

I was a junior in high school when my mom came into my room visibly shaken. "I can't keep doing this. There is going to come a time when we are going to leave, and I need you to help me get your sisters and not say a word," she pleaded.

[Editorial]  Don’t Feed the Stalker

October 6, 2010

Since the JFP launched eight years ago, we have witnessed many disturbing examples of vicious and personal attacks and libelous smears on websites, our own and others, and usually by people who refuse to use their real name on their electronic missives. We’ve also witnessed how the attacks are usually aimed at women who express opinions or who are in public or office.

[Dennis]  Mimic Registers

by Scott Dennis
October 6, 2010

It’s a postcard-perfect October afternoon, and I am outside enjoying it with my young son. Today, we are sitting together beneath a river birch tree enjoying a cool fall breeze. We make motor noises in stereo as we plow the dirt with our wooden toy tractors.

[Kamikaze]  Condemn the Cowardice

by Kamikaze
July 21, 2010

Men get a bad rap. Oftentimes we deserve it. But generally--luckily--the many good ones among us overshadow the bad apples. As we look forward to the annual JFP Chick Ball this weekend, we should again take a hard look at the heinous crime that is domestic abuse.

[Editorial]  Don’t Soft-Pedal Domestic Abuse

by July 21, 2010

Under Mississippi state law, it is too easy to get away with abusing animals and spouses. And too often, the same people do both.

[Purvis]  Wasteland of Empty Promises

by Casey Purvis
July 21, 2010

“Call—call the police!” I stammered through the phone tenuously gripped in my trembling hand. I was kneeling in my mother’s living room in the midst of broken glass and a carpet stained with drops of blood—his blood. He had punched out the glass in the patio door and the panes in the living-room windows.

[Editor’s Note] Hole-Filled Souls

by Natalie A. Collier
July 21, 2010

I know a woman who lives in the house with her children, her husband and his violent temper. She wears a mask. This woman, whenever I see her, has a joyful disposition, even when she's wearing long sleeves and ankle-length skirts or pants, even in this heat. I'm certain she has bruises she's hiding. Her children, I've noticed never take too many steps without knowing where she…

[Editorial] Women’s Fund Gets It Wrong … Twice

April 28, 2010

The Jackson Free Press has been a strong supporter of The Women’s Fund—including giving proceeds raised by our production of “The Vagina Monologues” this year to the group. We applaud the Fund for tackling the issue of domestic abuse and, like the JFP, focusing on tackling the systemic causes of the epidemic rather than just the outcomes.

[Editor’s Note] Happiness Worth Celebrating

by Ronni Mott
March 3, 2010

No one I know grew up in a mythical "Father Knows Best" family, where mom and dad nurtured the kids with Hallmark card philosophy and "You can do it!" bravado. In TV-land, mom didn't drink or get hooked on Valium or crack, and dad didn't have affairs or complete sentences with the back of his hand or a belt.

[Editor’s Note] The Path of Least Drama

by Donna Ladd
November 4, 2009

Everyone who reads me regularly knows that I despise the question "Why does she stay?" when asked about domestic-abuse victims. I've written and stated many times that I resent the fact that so many people, of both genders often respond to an incident of family violence by asking why the woman stays (and, yes, in the vast majority of instances, the victim is a woman. And often her children.) Many…

[Ronni’s Note]  A Good Woman Lives Here

by Ronni Mott
September 26, 2007

John followed me out of the bar, yelling as I crossed the street, yelling when I got into my car, yelling as I started the engine. I don't remember what he was yelling about anymore, but I'm sure it was about me being stupid, or incompetent, or a coward for walking away; maybe it was all three.
