Taking Risks

by Jackie Warren Tatum
August 27, 2008
All risks are not unhealthy ones, like having unprotected sex with a stranger. Risk-taking can be a normal, healthy part of life.
Let It Be

Its Saturday morning. I take a comfortable seat on a floor cushion and close my eyes. For a few moments, I focus on my breath moving steadily in and out. It takes no effort, since Im breathing anyway.

Lift Up Your Voices and Chant

by Ronni Mott

One of my most favorite things about going to church is singing. Whether its belting out a hymn or the softer sounds of the liturgy, raising my voice in praise to the divine is pure, unadulterated joy. I might…

I was nervous standing behind Dr. Glenn Mendoza, director of neonatology at Good Samaritan Hospital of New York. He was already at the podium talking to more than 300 people who came from all over the world…

Let’s backtrack to Jan. 1. You swore you’d stick to your diet and finally rid yourself of that layer of fat that has come between you and your two-piece for years. Well, guess what: Bikini season has passed. The beach crowds are skimpy, but your waistline is still massive.

Erik MacKinnon has more tattoos than I have black shoes, which is altogether an awesome statistic. With his working-man’s background (he was a construction worker for years) and independent mindset (he was born in Anchorage, Alaska, and grew up in Wyoming and Colorado) he may be an unlikely candidate to provide healing energy to your ever-so-southern, Mississippi aches and pains, but in MacKinnon’s case, you’d do well to let those first impressions ride. MacKinnon’s got what it takes.

In October 2006, Lelon Thompson did a one-day workshop at New Vibrations, Karen Parker’s bookstore and just-plain-neat new-age shop in Fondren. The workshop, “You’ll See It When You Believe It,” struck a chord and started something powerful in Jackson. Earlier this year, I spoke with Parker and Thompson.
The House Intention Bought

“We have an offer on your house,” the caller said. If I had been selling my house, that would have been happy news. The problem was that I was renting my house, and an offer meant that I would have to move out at the end of my lease term, a mere 10 months away.

Church attendance in the U.S. has remained static for 15 years. Many young people feel disconnected from religion, feeling that traditional churches don’t address their real-world concerns.

It’s the first question people have about acupuncture, and I’m no exception. But you gotta do what you gotta do for a story, right? So, putting my fear aside, I booked a consultation with Jerusha DeGroote.

If you’re anything like me, during the week I just can’t get it together long enough to cook a healthy meal or eat at a real restaurant. It’s easy to eat healthy at home when I have time—I buy a lean cut of meat and grill it with sage leaves and lemon, pairing it with roasted potatoes with olive oil and rosemary. It’s also pretty easy to choose wisely when eating at what my grandmother used to call a “sit down” restaurant, because the menus are usually varied enough to allow for healthier choices. Most restaurants will gladly substitute a salad or steamed vegetables for potatoes or rice, or prepare a meal grilled with no sauce.

The delicious aroma of oatmeal raisin cookies greets me as I push open the office door. I attempt to rebel against the evil forces pulling me toward the scent. In recent months, there have been pounds’ worth of weight-gaining opportunities in our back office area.

“My best time is 26 minutes,” Chef Luis Ramon Bruno brags about his 5K time. Bruno, 37, from the Bronx, N.Y., stares toward the governor’s mansion, where he is Gov. Haley Barbour’s personal chef. Gov. Kirk Fordice also enjoyed Chef Bruno’s cuisine during his term.

March is a stressful month. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and Valentine’s Day are all long gone, the days are often gray and cold, and we can’t count on another holiday from work for months. The trees are all still bare, the lawn is still brown. I always get a cold or have sinus problems in March, wondering when it will ever warm up. When will the buds start sprouting and the weather warm up enough so I don’t have to bundle up every time I go out?
