JFP Wins Three AAN Awards, Including ‘Public Service’

The Association of Alternative Newsweeklies and the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University announced the winners of the 2008 AltWeekly Awards. The Jackson Free Press placed in three categories, and will learn the placement of the awards at the national convention in Philadephia, Pa., in June.

The JFP placed in the new Public Service category for our extensive investigation, photography and Web coverage of our 2005 investigation of the murders of Charles Moore and Henry Dee, and the subsequent prosecution and conviction of former Klansman James Ford Seale in 2007 stories and blog entries collected here. That award will go to Matt Saldaña, photographer Kate Medley and Donna Ladd.

A related story, "We Are Family: A Klan Child Fans a Different Flame," by Donna Ladd, is winning a feature-writing award, bringing her total AAN awards to 8.

Reporter Adam Lynch is bringing home his third AAN award for local news coverage for his long-form news piece "The State of the JPD." With the latest three awards, the Jackson Free Press has won 17 AAN awards in five years of competition.

Congratulations, JFP! These awards are well-deserved. :)

I've read many alternative weeklies from different cities, and none of them can hold a candle to the JFP. Most all of them are irrelevant or just plain trashy. Congratulations to you all.

Thank you, slugbug. The alt-weekly is a long, hallowed tradition, and we work hard to live up to the best of that tradition and always talk up to our readers. Mississippians are intelligent, with a few exceptions, and deserve to be treated as such. Cheers.

You guys rock!

Donna, I actually ran across the issue with the Shirley story last week in a stash of JFPs at my house, and I immediately reread it.

It was really special to experience the growth and development of that story in class with you. Definitely a memorable experience.
