If so, what and what would you like to see more of?

Would you be willing to watch online exclusive programming?

Just curious

I catch an occasional documentary or special, but I think that if I knew more about the schedule, I would watch more. I'm sure I have missed a lot of good programs over the years. Does MPB have a programming guide I can get?

I grew up watching MPB (then called Mississippi ETV), and I loved the children's prgramming and instructional shows, especially cooking, painting and home improvement. I was watching Justin Wilson in kindergarten!

MPB does do a programming guide, we get it at my office. You could probably Google them, find their site & request to get on their mailing list...the guide is good, it has features on the different programs as well as a schedule.

I watch it at times, but it's usually if I'm flipping by it. I do like watching Arthur for some reason.

We have a full schedule on our front page, www.mpbonline.org.

We also have 3 TV channels now. 1 - MPB vanilla - our regular feed, 2 - all digital which means no kids programs for the most part and lots of pretty HD Nature, Nova, etc. 3 - Create, mainly dealing with creating stuff, house shows, Bob Ross, cooking stuff, all digital.

What kind of things would get you watching more?

It would be wonderful if MPB would provide more entertainment for the 25-40 age group. Seems like programming targets kids and older folk. There is rarely anything of interest on MPB for me. I mean I have watched some documentaries. But due to the inconsistency of that which pertains to me, I don't even follow the schedule and therefore never know when something that may be relevant to my life as a young, african american woman is playing. I am quite proud of MPB, worked there years ago.

Another thing that should be considered, y'all show the high school sports championships and I guess other college games too...but why isn't the Alcorn vs. JSU game televised. It's a traditionally state rivalry. I think some consideration should be given to showing that on MPB.

Thanks and I love it when companies come to the people to find out what we want. Thanks again for that! Might have to chime in now because of your interest in our interests. :-)

Thanks for the input.

We will be airing the state football championships, and I'll pass on the JSU/Alcorn comment.

A couple of programs I really enjoyed were geared towards African Americans. One was called "African American Lives" where DNA samples were taken of Oprah, Whoopi, Mae Jemison and other notables, and their genealogy was traced. I don't remember the name of the other program, but was a two or three-parter that was about slavery and indentured servitude in North America before chattel slavery came along.

Another program I liked was about race and the explanation that scientifically speaking, race does not exist, just genetic variations since all humans are over 99% alike.

TBro, do you all have tapes of this available?

That would be of major interest to me. Are you familiar with the program L.W. is talking about?

From programming director ..

African American Lives aired last year or the year before, probably in Feb. A new version/update is coming this Winter.

Can't help you with the second.

Also, got word that we're going to start an e-newsletter and let anyone who would like to know about upcoming programming sign up.

I'll update when this project is ready.

Sorry for multiple posting, but I don't see an edit post option.

Thanks

Tbro..its good you're asking..MPB is a good place to watch programming NPR is a good place to listen to radio...if you're either 6 or 60!!! but folks in between..no love. I know I see fundraising programs on all the time. and if they attempted to even touch a younger urban demo for even a couple hours a day. That would help during those "telethons" in the long run. So if youre gonna send that email over suggest more programming geared to a younger demo i.e. the hiphop generation...that would work for radio too. I dunno if ya heard or not but Ive got some free time on afternoons. I was "downsized" on my former radio gig..What does NPR have goin over there? and are there gonna be any more locally produced shows airing that *I* would want to watch?

...Like a Oprah-Montell style talk show geared towards a younger crowd 18-30. A radio talk show geared to that same demo... summin..just thinking out loud.

This probably makes me an uber nerd, but I really enjoyed it when Monty Python was on every Sunday night (wasn't it Sunday nights?) I'm not sure it's still showing regularly like that.

I do agree that there aren't as many things for the 18-35 crowd. I love when there are special concerts, though, and I LOVE LOVE Austin City Limits.

I need to get on that email list so I know what's going on...

I liked when they used to play Mr. Bean on Saturday nights. This was during the height of his popularity in the 90s. Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinsson), despite not saying much, was one of the funniest comedians around.

Tivo!

Though I don't even have cable so what do I know...

Also I'll list the email address next week for those that want to be included on programming updates and special events. It should start next week as long as they get the bugs knocked out. Or you could become a valued member and join up to receive the Fine Tuning programming guide (which I have a column in) and be up to date on all MPB events.

This discussion brings back memories of when I was a kid and wanted to work for ETV one day. I wanted to be a puppeteer like Jim Henson. I even had my own puppet show in first grade. Of course, the puppet was made of folded notebook paper. I also wanted to be an announcer and do voiceovers and stuff.

That would be cool. I wouldn't mind doing commercials, but I would love to do cartoon voices.

I read that getting into the voiceover biz can be expensive because you need to get all kinds of expensive recording equipment in order to make demos. I wonder if there's a way to get into it locally without having to do all of that. I hope you don't have to have a journalism background or anything. Folks used to tell me that I had a "radio voice" because it's kind of deep. (Thanks, Mom.) I did have a little practice announcing in school, though. I was student body VP in junior high, and I used to help read the announcements every morning on the intercom. Also, I was among several Not Here members at my high school to do an anti-drug PSA at WJSU. My line was something like, "School is serious business - grades, games and much more." I don't remember the exact words since that was about 17 years ago.

Okay, back on topic. :-)

Why yes, I most certainly do. I have P.O.V. and Wide Angle tivo'd. Great way to get independent movies and documentaries beyond Netflix.

I think a re-airing of Eyes on the Prize with the Sept. 27th forums would be a good fit, but I know you don't schedule programming.

And YES on online exclusive programming. Great pitch to the market that is underserved. We are too busy to commit to watch a show at a set time, and accessing online would be wonderful. It's the only way I've ever caught "Ugly Betty." Would love to see "Beyond Katrina" and "Writers" online. Especially would be useful in the classroom!

Emily! :) I was going to say that I want to see "Writers" more often, too.

LW, you can do recording at home on your PC for not a ton of $$... my BF has some programs on his computer and just one or two microphones (they can be expensive, but you can get less expensive ones just for basic purposes). Try googling "home recording" and you'll probably find tons of stuff. He orders things from a company called Sweetwater, too.

Well, I suppose it's time to do something with this voice. The voiceover world seems to like deep voices. I remember being told in first grade that I sounded like a boy, and I've been called "sir" a few times over the phone or through an intercom. To me, I sound like Charlie Brown. LOL

Anyway, I'm auditioning to be a reader at my church. You know, the one who reads scriptures while the pastor teaches or preaches. It would give me some practice.

Tbro, I'm not near Mississippi, but I do listen to LOTS of public radio. KERA has an excellent lineup. That should give you some ideas about what might benefit MPB.

L.W., you could always put your talents to a worthy call like the Radio Reading Service!

More information

Hey Emily, on the 27th we're airing the All-American Presidential Forums, moderated by Tavis Smiley and is with the Republican Candidates.

Also for you Writers fans, new episode will tie in with The War to air on October 4th.

That's great! I was at Northpark Mall today with our once a month kids event, and then down at the War Memorial promoting The War with the Secretary of State, so I've had a busy day. (watch Howard Balou tonight for the scoop)

I got a chance to do a reading a few weeks ago when the person who reads for the Tupelo paper couldn't come in. It was fun, but I went over by about 90 seconds trying to fit in the obituaries.

BTW, I am now one of the church readers. I read for the first time this week.
