Opinions on the new typefaces the Clarion-Ledger is using as of today (3/6/07) for its headline and sub-heads?

Personally, I'm not wild about 'em.

Okay, Okay. I think they stink too. :) I didn't want to be the first, however.

It's gonna take more than font changes to make it a better paper.

We were talking about that yesterday. I bought a paper at McDade's in order to tuck the package about Melton getting out of jail in my file. I hadn't picked up the print version in a while, and that font shocked me. It's hideous. The smaller it gets, the less readable it is. And did anyone see the obit page!?! (Do they always charge for obits?) The font on that page is ridiculous. That paper always makes the exact wrong decision. I'd feel sorry for them if that company wasn't such a monster. And, frankly, I don't feel bad for folks who choose to work for Gannett. They know what they're getting into—a pool of mediocrity designed to offend (or, apparently, excite) the least number of people.

If they'd learn to edit out passives, the paper would be 150 percent better. Instead, it seems like they practice putting as many as possible in one sentence. Especially in editorials.

I think (if I recall right) the first paragraph or so is free on Obits for them. After that...

weak. very weak. here is a CL editorial from yesterday.

Wait, did I say editorial?

It doesn't take a stand and instead promotes its storychat. So much for an editorial board taking a stand on an issue. Instead there is no accountability and give it to the people to decide while looking desperate by promoting something else in the middle of the editorial. Storychat must be a big flop if they have to do this.

It's all about taking journalism back to the people. So they can put out an even less trustworthy rag.

The mainstream media, starting with CNN and including Gannett, is screwing the pooch on the Pelosi-Syria story.

Good to see a story-chatter taking the Ledger to task over it.

And you will recall that The Clarion-Ledger endorsed Bush in 2004, saying that he deserved a chance to clean up the mess, or some such similar BS. And everybody with half a brain knew by then that the Iraqi War was a huge failure, and that our soldiers were being put in dangerous situations without the right resources.

The Clarion-Ledger is an irresponsible newspaper that is afraid to stand up for what's right if they believe that too many advertisers might disagree. That is why it garners so little respect from the community.

more garbage from editorial page.

editorial

Once again the CL uses its fablechat in its editorials. Nice to see it treating an anonymous post as fact.

I don't feel too sorry for these students. Sorry, but I WANT nursing school to be tough. I damn sure don't want to lower the standards or curriculum for nursing students. Do you want your life to depend on someone who was passed through school becaused they raised a ruckus. I've had several friends flunk a semester at Hinds Nursing School. Every one of them sucked it up, came back the next semester, and passed the boards.

The fact the boards are easier than the curriculum is irrelevant. You want the school to be tougher, not easier than the board exams so that you can pass the damn thing. I'm sure plenty of lawyers can tell you that the bar was easier than some classes (especially Professor Page alumni at MC). There are alway students who fail nursing school; this group was just larger than most. I think its a slap in the face to the students who DID work their asses off and pass nursing school or those who flunked and came back to graduate to give these kids a second chance at a final exam because they raised hell.

Danks, an urbane lawyer in civil cases, is expected to hand off a lot of the trial to Coxwell, his one-time law partner. In the 1990s, Coxwell was considered one of the top criminal attorneys in the state. In the last several years, he has focused more on civil cases.

How do you hand off "a lot of the trial" to someone?

Brian and Donna:

Here is a good op ed peice in today's WSJ. Written by the Publisher of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. He takes issue with the approach many newspapers are taking now to their websites and how it affects paid circulation.

no free lunch

I tend to agree with what he writes. At some point you have to ask yourself why you are giving away your product for free on a large scale when you need paid circulation to survive. There will not be enough money made off of online advertising to make up the difference.
