Greetings,

Over on the Clarion-Ledger forum, in the thread concerning the big green boxes, someone asked me why the JFP "hates" the Clarion Ledger so much. I know that you guys are hesitant to post over there, but if you would care to reply I'll be glad to post it for you...

I saw that post. We don't "hate" The Clarion-Ledger, but a primary mission of "alternative" media (meaning "alternative" to the existing corporate media) is to challenge them and hold them accountable in our own pages. We have seen example after example of poor media coverage of issues locally (such as Melton's mayoral bid) that have dramatic effects on the community. If the public does not speak up, then that coverage will not get any better and can hurt, rather than help, the community.

I also saw that someone there mentioned the "Weekender." The Weekend section only started bugging us when they pulled it out of the paper and started distributing it for free in white plastic boxes in order to compete with us and other free publications. And, at least initially, their ad rates seemed to be set to compete with ours, which is interesting for a paper that touts itself as so much bigger than ours. In addition, The Clarion-Ledger has tried to lure our writers and tell them they could not freelance for other local publications "like the Jackson Free Press and the Planet Weekly"—even as we encourage young writers to get published as many places as they can to help their careers.

As I said on another post earlier today, challenging corporate media is a primary part of our mission—it has nothing to do with "hate"; it has everything to do with encouraging a robust free marketplace of ideas in Jackson.

Thanks! I'll post it over there. Sorry to interrupt your other thread, but I got to thinking that posts way down here in the "media" section of the board might not be seen for a while...

Way to go Guardian. Endanger the lives of those students protesting that Iranian nutcase by publishing their picture. You could've at least blurred the faces.

Totally irresponsible.
